I believe that a person must get rid of illusions that enslave and paralyse her; that she must become aware of the reality inside and outside of her in order to create a world which needs no illusions. Freedom and independence can be achieved only when the chains of illusion are broken. (Erich Fromm)

How Do You Imagine God?
God in America and USA WEEKEND Magazine are partnering to explore Americans' images of God.

How do you imagine God? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I was raised a Catholic and went though Catholic schools from kindergarten to college. It took many years of seaching and questioning to wash the indoctrination from my mind. Now I have ceased seeking for a way to a supreme being and can finally just be me. All I know is that I know nothing.

My Beliefs

My greatest moment of doubt was ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator There was no great moment of doubt. Doubt was always in my mind from high school on and as I read more and learned more about Bible scholarship and how the Bible was written through the centuries, I knew my doubt was well founded.

My Faith History

As a child I believed ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator As a child I lived and breathed everything that was taught to me by the nuns. This "faith" helped me to grow in a disfunctional household and uncaring parents.
My spiritual journey has been ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator My spiritual journey began early when I was just 7 and was swept away by the incense in church and wanting to be with God. In my teenage years I wanted to become a nun but was rejected because I didn't have enough life experience. It was then that I turned away from the Catholic Church and became a seeker. Now I have stopped looking for all dogma is human created. 1 person liked this
I was raised as ... your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I was sent to Cathoilic schools by a family whose faith was very weak and not lived.
Are your beliefs or practices different from your parents? If so, how and why? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator My beliefs and practices were part of my very being when I was young. This was totally different from my parents whose religious practices were just for show. It annoyed them that my beliefs were so strong.

How I Practice My Faith

Where and when do you practice your faith? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I have stopped "practicing" my faith about 5 years ago. I finally came to realize that hearing about God from a priest from the outside wasn't the way. If there's a god he/she/it speaks from within me.
Does your family practice more than one religion or faith? If so, how do you blend the traditions? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator My family is Catholic but I'm the only member who doesn't attend church.

Religion & the Public Square

What should be the role of religion in politics? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator I don't think that religion should be a part o politics. I don't believe any spiritual faith story from any politican. In politics the bible should be the Consitution.
Should the Bible, Torah, Quran or other religious texts be taught as works of literature in public schools? Why or why not? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator As a teacher myself and one who taught in Catholic schools for 25 years, I don't believe that a teacher can teach any scripture can be taught impartically. I read my 2nd grade class a small children's book if available to highlite any religous holiday if there is a child of that tradition in my class. I don't believe that religion is the business of public schools.
Has 9/11 had any impact on your thoughts about religion? Are you more/less interested in learning about other religions? Do you feel more/less comfortable expressing your religious beliefs? your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator Before 9/11 I had no interest and little knowledge of Islam. Since 2001 however, I have read alot about the beliefs and traditions of it. I have encountered Moslems and reached out to them in order to understand what the ordinary Moselm thinks and believes and lives.
