Earnest Hemmingway provided an unforgettable account of the Italian defeat by the German Army at Caporetto in his book "A Farewell To Arms," which was made into a movie of the same name.

All Quiet on The Western Front (German, 1930)
Anti-war film about a group of students persuaded by the teacher to join the German army, only to learn what war is really like.

Das Boot [The Boat] (1981)
Movie based on a U-boat crew in the World War II; an excellent portrayal of the thoughts and feelings of submariners in the context of serving their country and completing their missions; in German with subtitles.

Dr. Zhivago (1965)
Movie based on Pasternak's novel of the same name; provides background to the Russian Revolution and the many ways Russian society was affected by the revolution and the civil wars; excellent re-creations of the mass desertion of soldiers from the eastern front.

Gallipoli (1981)
Movie based on the Australian and New Zealand armies' engagement at Gallipoli in 1915; excellent portrayal of the thoughts and feelings of the foot soldiers during this disastrous campaign.

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Movie based on the life of T.E.Lawrence; an excellent portrayal of the violence and slaughter in the Middle East, with insight into the political intrigue between the Arab leaders and the British during the war.

Paths of Glory (1957)
A masterful anti-war film about World War I by director Stanley Kubrick.

Red Rosa (German, 1986)
A film about Rosa Luxemburg, Polish-born Socialist and Political Activist.

Regeneration (1998)
Film about poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon meeting in 1917 at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh, where they had been sent for rehabilitation.

Shoulder Arms (1918)

Wings (1927)
