Fitchburg, Massachusetts
For inspiration, Barbara White drew from the community's history,
landscape and culture. The opening portion of her work, Raging
River, Rolling Stone, evokes the glacial activity that
etched the region's craggy landscape, making way for the teeming
Nashua River, which has played a crucial role in Fitchburg's
many industries. The piece quotes music composed or performed
in Fitchburg throughout its history: Adieu, a four-part
hymn (played by the brass in the excerpt below), The Rollstone
Polka, The Rollstone Cycle Club March, and the
Finnish melody, Metsäkukkia.
