Gabriel Ian Gould's Lokananta is an innovative work
in which a symphony orchestra and a Javanese gamelan ensemble
each "speak their own language" while engaging in a musical
conversation, sometimes harmonious, sometimes discordant,
sometimes in common beat, sometimes with each moving to its
own rhythm. As our world becomes more tightly connected, this
piece asks listeners to consider how we all can meet respectfully
as equals across lines of cultural difference.
