On the cliffs of Douglas Island,
in Juneau Harbor, mineralogist Charles Palache found
eighteen fossil species, including a species of Pleistocene
coral formerly unknown to science. When he uncovered several
fossil species previously seen only to the north of Juneau,
he theorized that the region's relatively mild climate had
once been much colder. Illustrations of Eocene
Mollusca, fossil specimens collected by the Harriman
Expedition.
