The expedition visited a farm on
Long Island near Kodiak where 1000 arctic foxes of the blue
variety were being raised for their fur. Fur farmers had
attempted to raise the silver-black variety, but had failed
because silver-blacks will only eat fresh meat. Blue foxes
were content to eat dried fish, and, in fact, congregated at
their feeding troughs as mealtime approached. Kodiak fox, Vulpes harrimani,
painted for the Harriman Alaska Series by Charles
Knight.
