Behind the Beans: Senseo

A small package of Senseo Medium Roast coffee

Featuring ground coffee packed in “pods,” Senseo is owned by the Sara Lee Corporation and is sold around the world. Sara Lee is the third largest coffee seller in the United States.

The company brands itself on selling a “timeless art form that continues to inspire the craft and culture of coffee… that cafés throughout Northern Europe have proudly served for more than 250 years.” Coffee blends by Senseo come from Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Kenya.

Sara Lee is one of the most egregious multinational corporations, with scandals including union busting, sweatshop labor use and tainted food products. The company scored the lowest in an Oxfam grading of the world’s four major coffee roasters in 2003. Grades were given on the basis of the prices paid to farmers, financial contributions and support for policy alternatives. According to Oxfam, "Sara Lee... has failed abysmally in almost every aspect of dealing with the coffee crisis.”
