Indie Lens Wins 2 News & Doc Emmy Awards

The News & Documentary Emmy Awards were presented on Monday, October 1, 2018, in a ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City, an event attended by more than 1,000 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists. Independent Lens was pleased to learn that two of our films, TOWER and Forever Pure, were bestowed with an Emmy.

All told, Independent Lens received 8 nominations, including for Birth of a Movement, National Bird, SEED: The Untold Story, The Bad Kids, and The Witness. TOWER received two nominations.

“We’re proud to have presented this extraordinary group of documentaries on Independent Lens,” said Lois Vossen, series Executive Producer. “These filmmakers spent years establishing trust with the people represented to tell multilayered, authentic stories and it’s gratifying to see their work recognized with the industry’s highest award for news and documentary programs.”

TOWER, directed by Keith Maitland, was honored for Best Historical Documentary.

Forever Pure, directed by Maya Zinshtein, won the Emmy for Outstanding Politics & Government Documentary.

The Farthest: Voyage in Space (Outstanding Science and Technology Documentary); FRONTLINE: Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (Outstanding Business and Economic Documentary; FRONTLINE: Mosul(Outstanding Cinematography: Documentary); POV: Last Men In Aleppo (Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary); The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick (Outstanding Research).
