Independent Lens Talkback: Cool School

There's a need to more fully document Los Angeles Art, Millard Sheets, Leo Politi, Julius Shulman, Mitsui (Mike) Kanemitsu, Bob Zoel, the salon of Charles Fletcher Lummis, and especially June Wayne before she passes.

The Ford Foundation support of June Wayne's Tamarind Lithography Workshop and the modern creation of limited edition "fine art prints" [for the good or the bad, of course, depending on what side the money is.] is a document by itself.

As I watched the program on the Ferus Gallery, its founders, and its artists, I was transfixed. It was beautifully produced, honest, informative and inspiring. I will look at most all art now in a more relaxed manner.

nice piece, but I missed the first ten minutes. I really love finding all of these bits that fill-in that gap between ab-ex and pop.

After tuning in just to see if this was going to be worth watching, I could not turn away. Best film I've seen about contemporary art in years.

Comparable Art Scene? The torch has passed to a few art critics......Dave Hickey, Holland Cotter, Roberta Smith, for starters. The fluid movement of non-exhibiting artists [artworkers], persistently renewing and strengthening their artworker-contacts, whether within or outside of the recognized art scene, is innoculating the American culture. Pay attention.

I remember being completely and utterly sucked into the art scene in santa barbara when I was in college... then I moved to arizona. and found that even in the tiny little hotbed that Phoenix is... there is an art scene that thrived with amazing visuals and sounds.
