Kelly & Sons
(May 2003) Kelly Wallace and his sons, brothers Jesse, 8, and Ray, 7, have a bustling—and possibly growing—household in San Francisco’s Castro District. While the addition isn’t another daddy right now (Kelly is still single), Jesse and Ray may be joined by a little brother or sister in the very near future. The boys are thriving in a new school and look forward to playing with their many cousins over the summer in their grandparents’ swimming pool. They are all excited about the possibility of adding another kid to the mix of their lively and active family.

Fanny & Her Dads
(May 2003) Twelve-year-old Fanny Ballantine-Himberg is a straight-A student and an enthusiastic cello player. She is not only a voracious reader but is becoming quite the writer as well. That her entry in her school’s essay contest, "Symbols of Courage", won first place was not a surprise to her fathers Philip Himberg and Jim Ballantine. Rather, it was the subject of the essay that floored them—the rainbow flag! Since neither of them were sure where she had even seen a gay pride flag, they were very surprised and, needless to say, very proud of their daughter. And although they have not been a couple for many years now, Philip and Jim are planning a family outing for the three of them on an island off the southern Georgia coastline this summer.

Doug & Oscar
(May 2003) Doug Houghton and his son Oscar are going to the beach! With a move to a house on the coast and a “new” 1967 Cadillac Coupe deVille convertible, which they call their Beachmobile, they are looking forward to the summer and settling into their new home. Doug describes their recent day in the courtroom—when the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals finally heard their class action suit against Florida’s gay adoption ban—as “very formal, Supreme Court-like,” and is anxiously awaiting the decision expected later this summer. Oscar’s social calendar is very busy these days, and as with many adolescents, he has become very conscious of his appearance. He is sporting a big afro now, which his dad says is a great source of pride for his son. Oscar will be going to basketball camp once school is out and is very happy hanging out with his big group of friends.
