Parole Conditions

Could you make it through parole successfully? If you come from a world of crime or drug abuse, you might not have many options when you’re released from prison. Chances are the only place you can find help is with your existing network of friends—in the same environment that may have led you to prison in the first place.

Regina Allen exits a public restroom after a drug test carrying her urine sample.

Richard Salazar plays cards with his friends, who are gathered around a table piled with beer cans.

These are some general conditions a new parolee might encounter:

  • Seeking, obtaining and maintaining employment is mandatory.
  • You, your residence and your property are subject to search at any time without notice.
  • The parole agent must always know where you are living and working.
  • You must notify your parole agent in advance of any change of address or employment.
  • Permission from your parole agent must be granted if you travel over 50 miles from home.
  • You must get written permission from your parole agent if you will be out of your county for more than 48 hours.
  • You may not possess or be near any firearms, knives or other weapons (kitchen knives must remain in the kitchen and not be hidden).
  • Associating with gang members or criminal organizations is forbidden.
  • You may not possess or be near any illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia.
  • Depending on your record or violation, you may be required to refrain from drinking alcohol.
  • You may not associate with persons on parole or probation, or inmates in a penitentiary.
  • You must submit to drug testing.
  • You may be required to submit to electronic monitoring.
  • You may be required to submit to mental health or substance abuse treatment.
  • You must obey your parole agentıs instructions and conditions of parole at all times, or you can be arrested and returned to prison.

(Special conditions are also applied based on the individual’s offense. Conditions of parole vary from state to state.)
