  • Imprisonment rates in the U.S. have increased fourfold since 1973, and two-thirds of U.S. parolees now return to prison within three years of their release. What do you think are some of the reasons behind this high rate of reentry?

  • “I had $200 coming out of prison,” says parolee Aaron Shepard. “It’s hard, man. The system gives you enough money just to hang yourself.” Do you agree that the current parole “system” needs improvement? Why or why not?

  • Filmmaker Goro Toshima hopes that A HARD STRAIGHT will give viewers “a deeper understanding of the difficulties that one faces when on parole.” Have the stories of Regina, Smiley and Aaron changed your perceptions of ex-prisoners and parolees? If so, how?
