I did not have the privilege of knowing Auntie Rell personally, but I was certainly aware of her efforts to help women finally achieve their due respect and honor in the world of he’e nalu for many years. Rell was one of those inspiring local sistahs who spring from ordinary circumstances and humble origins to achieve true greatness (in her case both locally and internationally) by virtue of their noble spirit and great character.
When I was a child, I did not have many personal heroes or heroines to look up to, but today (with the benefits of age and maturity) I offer a silent but sincere ‘mahalo nui loa’ to three people who touched me deeply with the greatness of their personal mana: Duke Kahanamoku, bruddah Eddie Aikau, and Auntie Rell. All of these extraordinary, ordinary individuals exemplified the essential matrix of what we still regard as ‘The Aloha Spirit’, despite the small-minded meanness that has regrettably replaced it in so many places on the islands today. All three of them gave from the heart in that unique and splendid way only those who are fully in touch with their ancient Hawaiian roots may, and it is that ennobling state of gracefulness, along with Rell’s joyful synergies with the Mother Ocean and her spontaneous love for life, that made Rell the singular example all of us may draw inspiration from in our own ordinary lives.
Back in the 1960s, a well known psychologist learned that he had contracted a particular deadly type of cancer that, as in Auntie Rell’s situation, led quickly to a dismal and hopeless terminal prognosis. This individual, drawing upon the same source of personal illumination Rell did, used the two remaining months of his life to write a book about what it was like to face death as it approached inevitably and rapidly. The book, titled ‘The Everyday Courage of Ordinary Life’, focused not on the sort of flashy ‘John Wayne’ fantasy image that we have all been led by Hollywood to identify with heroes, but on the down-to-earth, day-to-day courageousness and indomitable spirit that may create potential heroes out of any of us, at any time. Auntie Rell (putting aside her remarkable skills as a Hawaiian ‘waterwoman’) was one of those ‘ordinary’ heroines whose remarkable strengths and joyous regard for all life made her stand out above her peers so splendidly, despite the inalterable physical reality she faced. And it is that type of genuine, real, and substantial ‘heroism’ she demonstrated in her day-to-day life that still impresses me terribly.
Rell’s demise was a blow to all of us who held such high regard for her, but I take some comfort from knowing that in that great traditional manner of the islands, Rell has now rejoined her ancestors in the Mother Ocean that gave us all birth, as an aumakua for all people (not just those of Hawaiian blood) and a continuing inspiration to all of us to live this gift of life to the fullest, but always in the kindest and most generous manner the human spirit is capable of. Eia au, eia 'oe, me ke aloha pumehana, Aunti Rell!

Anyone who sets out on a path which they know is difficult, and who loses hope from time
to time, can find hope and inspiration in "The Heart of the Sea." I came upon your film
entirely by accident: I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night, realizing that I had
fallen asleep with the TV on. But tired as I was, I couldn't turn it off. I had never
heard of Rell Sunn before, but now I will never forget her.
It was clear that Rell wasn't obsessed with competition, but that she was just doing what
was fun for her, and what came naturally. She didn't ask to live such a difficult life,
but she lived it with so much more than courage. People have been saying for a long time
that courage is taking action even when you are afraid. Rell's story has made me see that
courage isn't really the issue. Indescribably bad things happen in life, but if you just
go on, and do whatever has meaning and value for you, you are treading the correct path.
The result is the best of all possible worlds: A satisfying life, for however long it
lasts, and everlasting inspiration for the rest of us. For what Rell has shown me, my
feelings for her are indescribable.

This movie is an insipration to say the least. Tears of Joy and Sorrow were my testimony
to how deeply this film impacted me. Rell's story will be part of any program I become
involved when I obtain my BA in Social Work from MCC. I spent over 20 years in health care
and have never seen anyone who received a diagnosis and transended it the way Rell did.

This is the 3rd time that I have watched this movie and have enjoyed it each time. I grew
up in the Waianae area all my life and remember the 70's and I do remember her. We used to
swim at Makaha beach. My 3 older brothers remember her so well because they used to surf
with her. When she had passed, it was a sad day for all of us. Everyone who knew of her
and those who barely knew her, shed a tear for her. What a wonderful person she was always
wearing a smile and making you feel welcomed. I am truly blessed to have known her for a
short while.

I can't tell you how touched we were by this film. For more than 25 years each year we
have spent at least two weeks in Hawaii, we think of it as our second home and this film
not only captured the beautiful spirit of a beautiful woman, but also the spirit of the
islands which has to be experienced to be understood. It also makes clear that beauty comes
at a price, but in Rell's case that courage overwhelms the cost.

Just wanted to extend my gratitude to PBS, the filmmakers & of course Rell for such an
inspiring & uplifting documentary.
I had the good fortune to see it on KQED last night. Rell was a woman of true grace &
beauty, inside & out. Her love of nature, love for others, her caring & giving spirit,
it's hard to find the words that can adequately describe all her wonderful qualities.
Those of us moved by her story should take whatever opportunities we can to share it with
others. Rell will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.

I just watched this incredible documentary about an incredible woman. Rell Sunn, to
answer the initial questions, apparently did wonders for women in surfing but I believe
she did more for the self esteem of the women in her area and all those that knew her.
I was very impressed with her love of life, positive attitude and courage. She was an
inspiration in life and thanks to this well done documentary, she will continue to
inspire.
If hollywood wants to make this into a movie, I hope they do this one right as PBS has.

I found this video not only inspiring but also heart warming. Sometime in a persons life
they will meet someone so incredible and remarkable that a single description instantly
comes to mind, invincible.
Imagine hearing from that invicible person, someone you looked up to, you thought could
never get hurt tell you that they have a deadly disease, an incurable disease that will
eventually kill them. You would get this feeling that something, anything could happen to
you. If that person got sick it's surely possible that you would get sick too, right.
Well rell sunn never gave off that feeling. She never complained or showed any pain.
While people sick like her were being tended to in bed. Suck in their house, health
conscience. Rell Sunn was outside in the ocean. To her the world was her medicine, and the
ocean was her cure.
People every where not only looked up to her because she was a great surfer or she was
still kicking, even with the weight of cancer on her sholders. They looked up to her
because she was a great person at heart. Forgeting the fact that she had cancer she went
out and made sure that people wouldn't lose their role model, mother or friend by locking
herself up in some hospital. She made sure that the people around her were okay. To Rell
Sunn making sure that her friends and families didn't get affected by her disease was more
important then how the disease was affecting her.
Rell Sunn's inspirational attitude may have not gotten through cancer but it got through
to my heart she will always be a role model to me and everyone else. Thank you Rell Sunn.

After living in Hawaii for almost 5 years, you would think I should know about rell sunn,
especially as I am a surfer, but I din't until we covered the topic in English class. Her
story is so awe inspiring. She really made a roadway for womens surfing, by just doing
what she loved to do. But not only did she surf, she held kids competions and encouraged
many others to try surfing as well.
Rell will not only be remembered as one of the best women surfers out there, she will be
remembered as a fighter. Rell developed cancer early in her life, and fought it for 14
years! All through this time, she remained strong for the people she loved, even if she
wasn't feeling good, or wasn't sure she was gonna make it. That is such a good example of
her love for others.
When Rell was a kid, she was told not to be afraid of the ocean, because her hawaiian
ancestors would always protect her. I really think this is what inspired her to be such a
great diver and surfer.
Rell Sunn was before my time, but I feel so close to her, not only because I live in
Hawaii, but because of her warm aloha spirit that extends to everyone. Even from a video,
you can just tell that the spirit of aloha is present in her.

I think pioneering surfers thought that since REll Sunn did surfing anyone can.Rell Sunn
will be remebered as "QUEEN OF MAKAHA".Rell's connection to her Hawaiian culture and her
talent will conect to the Hawaiian culture by just being a loco surfer girl.Although I
didn't know about Rell Sunn untill my teacher showed the class a documentry of her I felt
vey touched.

This film was nothing short of outstanding. As a film student, watching the superior
cinematography was very inspiring. As a grandaughter of a woman who passed by the cause of
breast cancer it struck a chord like no other. I caught the film by chance late last night
and could not stop watching. Now I want to make sure that other women see this film and
help Aunty Rell touch thousands more. Thank you.

Rell Sunn, the Queen of Makaha was a truly inspiring person. She knew what she wanted and
strived to get it...she had done things that no one has ever done before.
Rell had known that she wanted to surf...not only for fun but in competitions just like
the men. She had set out with only a few other women to start a pro-surfing tour. They
wanted to be able to compete around the world just like the men did. She even started a
surfing competition for children since she had known that as a child she enjoyed surfing
and wanted to compete when she was young. The way she set out to start something that she
really wanted and knew that it would benefit the people around her is really inspiring.
She was able to start something that a lot of people wanted but were never willing to step
out and do it.
Rell Sunn was an outgoing, inspiring and enthusiastic woman. She overcame many obstacles.
She started the pro-tour for women surfing. She created and ran the Menehune surf
competition for kids. She was able to live for 14 years with a life threatening disease.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer and didn't let it prevent her from doing what she
loved. Even though she was sick and was going in for KIMO she still took the time go get
out to the beach to surf, watch the kids and help them. She always made time for everyone.
She gave them tips, cheered them on and had fun with them. She took them on a trip so they
could compete although she was sick, exhausted and should have been resting. She always
made time for others. She had the biggest heart and made time for everyone...which is
practically why everyone called her Aunty Rell through out Makaha.
Rell being a Hawaiian, growing up with old beliefs and the Aloha spirit contributed to
the way she did things. She believed in her ancestors spirits being in the water. She
believed that they would protect her, so she knew that she would never drown. She believed
they would always push her along so she'd be able to catch that wave she wanted and she
would always be safe, so she could just have fun and not worry.
Rell was a wonderful person who had a tremendous impact on others. She not only taught
others things she knew, but she touched there hearts and made the things she knew were
important, important to them.

i really didnt hear of rell sunn until i saw this video. the video that we saw 4 our 8
grade english calss was called heroes of hawaii. even then i didnt think that it would be
about a women. i thought that it would be more about king kamehameha 1. after i saw this
video i think that rell is just as important as king kamehameha when he united the islands
together.
i think this because rell was a person how would put others bfore herself. she was nice
to everyone and i think that she had an impact on everyone that she had met. in a way rell
sunn changed everyone in a way if u knew her or if you just watched the video.
as you watch the video you feel like you know her personally. you can just feel what she
went through and just her spirit and how much happyness she brought to people.
even though rell had cancer she didnt let that bring her life down or let it get in the
way of doing what she loves. i think that by doing this she is a hero.

Rell Sunn was a truly an inspiring person. She was known as a terrific surfer, but was a
lot more to the people that knew her. She cared about everyone. She made time for everyone
and shared all of her love and aloha spirit with them. She did things not for herself, but
to benifit others.
Rell was strong at heart and spirit. She made sure that she always faught to her fullest
and did her best. She loved to live life to the fullest! And to always do her best!

Pioneering surfers like Rell paved the way for many other women surfers by giving them
more self-reliance. From my point of view Rell will always be remembered as a person that
never gave up. She'll also be remembered as a champion in surfing and more.
I personally think that Rell always gave back to the community by doing a little extra
work such as making trash pick ups every so often.

This Is a very compelling film. Telling the story of a great women of Hawaii to the whole
world. Rell Sunn showed Aloha to the sea's as well as the children and everyone else. Her
love for the sea has taught us many. The profesional surfer has showed promise for young
women surfers back then who wanted to go pro when it was a man sport. Rell embraced the
water scince a young age. Probably just living by water gave Rell a chance to realy be a
"waterwoman". Her grandmother gave her the name Kapolioka'ehukai which means Heart Of The
Sea. Rell believed she would never drown because The bond she had and the belief that all
her forefathers were in the ocean. Her 14 year fight with breast cancer was well faught and
it sadened me to hear she died. The film was great and I loved it. She showed the Aloha
spirit.

Rell Sun also remembered as Kapolioka'ehukai, was a great professional surfer. She (and
other female pro surfers) helped to inspire women to go forth in their dreams no matter
what they may be. Rell will always be forever in our hearts and in our greatest dreams.
She taught us courage. She taught us love for the land and the sea. She lived with breast
cancer for 14 years, and never complained. She just tried to live her life to the fullest.
She, will always be a Hawaiian hero. Forever!!!

This story made me realize how beautiful Hawaii is, and how very lucky I am to live here.
Rell Sunn is a great role model for anybody because of her energetic spirit, positive
attitude, and she also has the beauty of the ocean inside and outside of her. Her smile
warmed Hawaii, and she had plenty of great friends. This video was very outstanding and
Rell Sunn truly is a incredible surfer, and person. I loved every second of this video!
Thank you very much for sharing the rare spirit of Rell Sunn with us.

When I first saw the Rell Sunn movie I was wishing that I was oneof those kids who knew
her. I felt inspirered to learn how to surf. But I haven't yet. She was an insperation to
all women and children. By doing the sport and not caring what the men say. When she died
everyone in town almost went to the furnal. She is truely a legend.

To tell you the truth i had never heard of Rell Sunn before I saw this video. I had to
watch this documentary in my 8th grade english class. The project / assignment is called
"Heroes of Hawai'i."
When I watched this video I began to realize who she was. She was not only a great surfer
but a great person with a good heart. She belived in good things and having fun. She was
always positive about life. Its sad that she was diagnosed with breast cancer but even
though she remained strong and hopeful and sometimes the worst things happen to the best
people. I admire Rell's courage and kindness which I will always remember.
When i write my paper on Rell Sunn, I will know that she realli was one of Hawai'is
heroes.

nicest and most known for caring i think that she will be very missed and hope she is
doing well wereever she is at and i know she is watching over the children and people of
hawaii. i know her spirit will live on forever and so will her legend.

I think that Rell Sunn was a very passionate person who lived everyday like there was no
tomorrow. She believed that surfing saved her life and in a way i think it did to after see
her movie because she wasn't afraid of getting hurt in the water because she knew she was
protected by her family and friends that were burried in the ocean.Rell Sunn was also a
very giving person and since she was so giving to other people that why maybe she lived so
long with cancer because god wanted to give her something she could value a lot and that
was her life.

As I was watching this documentary in my 8th grade English class, I was moved at the way
Rell Sunn lived her life. She would try hard at something she wanted and would persevere.
Her personality would light the gloomiest of rooms and could turn a frown upside down.
Just as hurricanes leave a trail of destruction, she left a trail of healing wherever she
went. She gave the keiki of the world a chance to show their skills at the Menehune Surf
Competition held in Makaha. She helped educate others on how to deal with breast cancer
and she was there for you whenever you needed a helping hand. Her tender care for the
ocean and inhabitants made the seas even more elegant. She truly was the "Heart of the
Sea".

Rell Sunn wasn't only a great surfer, but a great person too. people just loved to be
around her, as she loved to be around other people. Rell Sunn had many skills in life
rather than just surfing that she loved to share with others, and others loved her for
sharing. She won't only be remembered as a great surfer and person, but she will be the
one that people believe will protect them when they jump in the ocean.
Rell was one of those women who showed everyone the aloha spirit and didn't care that she
won everything because no matter what place your in, she felt like a winner, and made
others feel like a winner.
I think that because Rell felt so comfortable in the water, so connected, that she could
just do what she does at her best. wheather its diving, surfing, or even fishing. She knew
that she was safe with her ancestors watching over her.
I think that being able to have seen this video was just amazing. Its almost as if Rell
was spreading her aloha even more with these inspiring memorys that she shares.

As a local of this wonderful place we all call HAWAII, we are taught to ecknowledge are
hero's and elders.
I never knew about this wonderful lady who goes by the name of Rell Sunn and also by
QUEEN OF MAKAHA. I did not know about Rell until my english teacher showed us this very
much inspiring video.
I truly can say that Rell paved the way for many young surfers in Hawaii especialy the
young girls. While watching i could feel the love and passion that Rell had for the ocean
and for the aina(land). I also could feel the love and passion that she had for surfing
and diving as well.
Seeing how much people talked about her I could realy tell that everyone respected and
loved her so much, and in these exciting stories there were only good things about her and
no bad things.
After i watched this movie i was so touched by Reel's story. Her words gave me a whole
new perspective on many things such as the ocean, surfing, and most important of MALAMA
IKA AINA which in hawaiian means to "take care of the land"
In, conclusion i truly can say that Rell Kapolioka' ehukai Sunn is a great HERO to me and
many other people.

I think because of Rell Sunns fight, it encouraged other women and girls to surf as well
if they havent already. The quotes from Rell Sunn are really inspirational, like shes
never afraid of drowning because of her ancestors and that they will protect her. Well the
main thing is that what Rell Sunn did was really brave, and her fight of breast cancer was
really courageous of her.

Rell Sunn forced people to acknowledge and embrace the female surfer. She will be
remembered for a lot of things; but more so for her warmth and easy smile. Her Hawaiian
culture helped her to hone her skill as a waterwoman; and her profound love of her birth
place. This lady was and still is an inspiration to a lot of people. She makes you continue
to have hope and embrace life; no matter what life throws at you.

I was so moved after watching this documentary that I felt compelled to
learn more about Rell Sunn and to share with others how her life story has
affected me. So many aspects of Rell Sunn's life remind me of my mother
and of myself. My mother, who died of brain cancer in 2000, was both an
athlete and a dancer, like Rell. In later years, her sport was golf and
she played every day she could until she died at age 78. Although I am
not a surfer, I love to swim, scuba dive, sail and boogie board in the
ocean. I lifeguarded for many years. I actually was swimming before I
was walking.
Rell also reminds me of my mother in the many ways she has touched
peoples' lives and has such a great passion for life. My mother was a
literacy volunteer teaching many adults to read, worked for Legal Aid, was
actively involved with Keep Loudoun Beautiful, picking up litter along our
county roads, and gave blood regularly, just to name a few things. In her
younger days, she was a pilot in WWII with the WASPs (Women's Ai
r Service Pilots) transporting planes to go overseas, flying cargo and
test piloting planes. Near her death, her last words before she
completely lost her ability to speak, were "78". She couldn't get over
the fact that she was dying at the "young" age of 78, since her mother and
aunts lived into their 90's. I will always feel her spirit with me and
Rell Sunn's life story has made such an impact on me, that I feel her
spirit is with me also. Thank you for producing such an outstanding
documentary of her life.

The film moved me. I had no prior knowledge of Rell Sunn and her life
story. I was "channel surfing" when I stumbled on the beginning of this

touched by her. I wept openly, I weep now.
Her life was an inspiration.
Her battle with cancer was an inspiration.
My life carries no great burdens, her life example helps me to appreciate
the wonderful life I have and hopefully will aid me to live life to its
fullest.
I am going to buy this film so that the feeling does not fade and so that
I can share it with others.

I saw this program scheduled at an earlier date (two weeks ago), but passed on it,
thinking that it was about some Hawaian dude I've never heard of.
So, tonight, I saw that it was being shown again, and for some strange reason, decided I
should check it out.
I'm glad I did. She was more than a class act. Her beautiful soul permeated her entire
being. Everything she did flowed from this core of lovliness. The most graceful surfer
I've ever witnessed. Her ballet-like movements on a surfboard were the equivalent of a

graced to have experienced her presence.

While I enjoyed the documentary on Rell Sunn I was left with the distinct
impression that she was not married when she died, or during her cancer
ordeal. I know she had a first marriage that ended in divorce, from which
her daughter was born, but I read that she had a second marriage to Dave
Paramenter who was with her during her 14 year fight with cancer. Why was
he never mentioned in the film? Why was the viewer left with the
impression Rell had many friends but no husband?

This is the true power of film: To touch, move and give immortality. Rell
Sunn's magnificent spirit lives forever, and thanks to Charlotte Lagarde &
Lisa Denker Rell's story lives on.
As someone who is deeply committed to helping independent filmmakers,
HEART OF THE SEA stands as a living example of how great cinema can be.
Movies do NOT need millions and special effects nor big stars much less
paint-by-numbers scripts in order to succeed. What we as a society
perhaps need is a re-definition of "success." If so, then both Lagarde
and Denker show a way for filmmakers. And Rell's life certainly displays
a spirit that our crass American, consumer-driven, "ME ME ME" culture
needs to get to.
Hang loose, Rell!

about the result of our polluting our environment. The image of Rell running after the DDT
truck getting saturated with DDT made me furious about all the times we use products that
the chemical industry says are safe. The US had the HIGHEST breast cancer rates in the
WORLD and yet the administration and business constantly places profit above environmental
concerns. The drug companies just keep developing new (very expensive) drugs when what we
need to do it address the causes and CLEAN UP THE ENVIRONMENT. It is sad to think of
Hawaii - a magical beautiful place using toxic pesticides. I know DDT is no longer used,
but I wonder what they use on all those golf courses! The last time I was in Hawaii I had
to argue with the hotel management not to spray for bugs in my room.

I was so lucky to have been channel surfing tonite! The people that did this film are as
impressive to me as Rell is! I'm so touched, I'm so glad I saw it-thank you so much for
doing it, it proves good promotes good & that it just keeps multipling. It also helps
restore faith in human nature - I always knew as women we'd do good things for the world!
Please feel good about yourselves for doing it so Rell could be shared by all of us.

I just saw this film, and am awestruck at the beautiful spirit in Rell Sunn, which shines
out in the film. The film let me feel as if I had actually known her, and as though I have
been touched by that spirit - so strong, so optimistic, so involved, so real. What a gift
she seems to have been to the world. Thank you and her for sharing that with the rest of
us.

To have come upon Heart of the Sea was truely inspiring. She overcame every odd that she
was dealt, and still found herself back to her roots. She embraced every moment knowing it
was life's beauty, regardless of the sorrow from the cancer, politics and raising a family
by herself.
As she said "we can dream forever, but we have to do something now", and so she did and
she just kept going.
I hope that I can make someone feel how Rell Kapolioka'ehukai Sunn has made me feel;
inspired - as a mother, an athlete and a friend~ Aloha Rell.

I surfed the sames waves in the early 60s with David Nueava, Candy & Marge Calhoun, Linda

They were very influential on my life. At 55, it seems like yesterday at Huntington Beach

The Spirit of Rell is so beautiful that you want to share her life with others so that you
see what an incredible woman she was. I'm hoping to find out when it will be aired again
so that I can tell my friends and family to watch - because this is something that
everyone can enjoy together and get so much out of it! Thank you so much for sharing her

For a girl from the Midwest who loves the sea, the recent "Independent Lens" on Rell Sunn
was immediately captivating for the beautiful footage of Hawaii, a place I dream of
visiting. As I continued to watch, however, the story of this phenomenal person appealed
to me on so many levels: as a woman, as a nature-lover, a person struggling with the
effects of cancer in her family. Thanks to PBS for airing this beautiful story of a pure,
lovely soul who worked tirelessly for her people and her world. I know her story has
changed many lives, mine included.

A wonderful film about a wonderful woman. I was touched to tears, even still as I write
this. Growing up in Southern California, a surfer myself, I knew of Rell. However chancing
across the program tonight I never new how incredible a woman she was.
Having been married to a beautiful Hawaiian girl for almost 15 years, I am proud that she

What an amazing job the filmmakers have done; to be able to allow Rell Sunn to continue to
touch the lives orf so many people, to continue to be an inspiration to people who never
met her in life, even after her passing, is a blessing for us all. I watched this
documentary a couple of months ago, and Rell's story has stayed with me. The story of Rell
Sunn has made me want to become a better person, to somehow honor her life and her spirit
by more fully embracing life myself.

I missed the beginning of the movie but thought that Rell Sunn's story was definately an
inspiration to everyone but especially to those dealing with cancer themselves. I had
heard some of her story at the time of her death and felt a loss at that time. She was an
incredible woman and a fantastic role model for all of us living in the islands as well as

I wanted to thank the film makers and PBS for showing this beautiful film. I woke up at
4am after dreaming a nightmare and felt very out of place. I turned the TV on and the
independent lens just started.
The beauty of Rell is haunting, I could not stop thinking about her since. A person I've
never met, never heard of before viewing this film and yet now I feel so affected by her
life and her existence. Rell Sunn is a person we should learn about in school! I teach
sociology, I am going to show this film to my students.
I also wanted to say that Rell Sunn and her life reminded me of my friend Janet Melvin
from Philadelphia who, like Rell Sunn, has been and will continue to be a guiding light
for many, and who like Rell Sunn died of cancer. Two oustanding people I will never
forget.
Thank you again for a beautiful piece of cinematography about a beautiful person.

Thank you so much for bringing Rell Sunn into my life. What an amazing woman! What a
beautiful Spirit! I could watch this over and over again for inspiration in a world that
is woefully without it. She is beautiful and I was struck by her incredible positiveness,
her Spiritual attitude, her awesome fearlessness, her constant courage in the face of such
daunting challenges. We share the love of the sea and I do believe it kept her heart and
soul going, when she was in incredible physical pain, fighting for her life. She didn't
give in, she just dove back into the water and kept on going, when others would've died
long before. I am so impressed by her spirit and the spirit of her ancestors, her friends
and the Hawaiian people who loved her into life and propelled her Spirit into eternity.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Please show this again and again for inspiritation to
those of us in need of it. What a wonderful surfer she was and how grand it was that she
decided to take it to the top and be as good as she was. Her form was magnificent and her
beauty shined brightly in everything she did. She left behind an incredible legacy and a
beautiful daughter, how lucky we were to have her.
I hope one day to be able to get the film for myself. Most Gratefully, I remain, Barbara

I came upon this program last nite, and it was SO WELL done!i truley enjoyed it, and can't
imagine why I've never heard of Rell Sunn before. she was such a beautiful person inside
and out....she just radiated. I greatly admired her determination to enjoy life and not
allow her illness to slow her down>>>>>she is definately a great role model for people who
may be ill or are perfectly healthy......LIVE every moment! I was crying at the end of the
program when they scattered her ashes over the sea...it was so sad, but you know that that
is where she would want to be. I only wish my local PBS station would repeat it again, and
at a reasonable time. THANK YOU so much though,...it was GREAT!

Her untimely passing is a loss for Hawaii and the rest of the world. I am sorry I never

Aloha,
Rell Sunn is as much a hero, or heroine, as anyone I have ever known of or studied. Why
did I not hear of her until after her death?
Why, in our society, does our media and history emphasize politics, economics, the
military, even criminals more than someone like Rell Sunn? Perhaps, if we would teach our
children about Rell and any others like her, we could actually improve our society and
world.
The film makers should be so proud of spreading Rell's light to others and should be
encouraged to continue with work such as this.

I lived on Oahu 24 years ago when I manage a record store and became enamoured with the
"Aloha Spirit." It was only last year that I discovered music of Israel Kamakawi'ole and
now last night found out about another Hawaiian Treasure, Rell Sunn. Hearts of the Sea did
a great job documenting the wonderful spirit embodied by Rell. This video should be
required viewing for any person just diagnosed with cancer. Although I was in Hawaii a
short time, my heart still thrives whenever I see the aloha spirit in people or nature.
Thank you Rell for filling this world with your Aloha spirit.

Thank you for such a wonderful, well-done documentary.
'Independent Lens' airs at 1AM! on my local PBS station (WQED) in Pittsburgh. Having
fallen asleep on 'Charlie Rose,' I'm glad I woke up in to view it before the station
signed off the air.
I am an African-American breast cancer survivor. Needless to say, I was crying throughout
the film. But more than anything else, I couldn't help but be inspired by ALL the things
Rell Sunn did, and the way that she did them. I wish I could have handled dealing with my
initial breast cancer diagnosis (Summer, 1999) with such grace and wisdom.
Seeing Ms. Sunn deliver her outreach talks to other women in the Hawaiian community struck
a chord with me. It takes a lot to speak up, speak out and share information on a disease
that is changing your life.
Rell Sunn was never a 'victim' to her cancer. That was and is still clear.
I also enjoyed learning about a woman who loved her life, her culture and all that
surrounded her. I think to call Rell a 'superwoman,' would be missing the point.
What is most disconcerting is that I had never heard of this remarkable woman before. When
I think of women surfing, the only mental images that come to mind are those of young,
blond females. When I see films on women surfing, why don't I hear her name mentioned. Why
is this? (I'm sure my location has something to do with it.)
All in all, I appreciated seeing other another ethnic minority woman overcome such great
odds.
Thank you.

Hi myself and my husband were fortunate to have known and stayed with Rell in Makaha. We
met her in Byron Bay Australia in 1986 she has been an inspiration to women surfers and
men surfers all over the world and had plenty of aloha. We always had the best fun with
Rell either surfing, snorkeling, spearfishing going to Hawaiian concerts or even to the
local stores you name it if there was fun to be had Rell would have us there. Rell will
always be in our hearts. We haven't seen the video "Heart of the Sea" but have ordered it

I can't believe I never heard the name Rell Sunn prior to watching this program. What an
inspiration to women of all ages. Rell is someone all women should aspire to - she was a
great surfer, an even better diver, a community organizer, a single mother, cancer fighter
and all around a great woman. Rell Sunn's story needs to be told to a wide audience - I am
39 and I was so motivated after viewing the program! One of the best programs I have ever
seen! Submit this for an Emmy - everyone should know about Rell and her influence on
countless youths in Hawaii!

I apparently, like so many, I had never heard of Rell Sunn before, but fell in love with
Heart of the Sea. A "surf bum" will never be the same. We can all be so grateful God gave
this woman so much heart and soul.
I get Wisconsin Public Television here, and they do not tell me when I might see this
again. Can you find out for me, I would be greatly appreciative. All the computer magic,
and mostly, that is all I want to know. I'll think about it more, once it has touched my
soul again.

6/2/03
first of all, i'd like to thank my teacher for showing us this and by sacrificing his own
"me" time to record it. second, i'd like to recognize the extroardinary feats that Rell
Sunn has accomplished. one of those feats would be how she kept trying, and when cancer
pushed, she pushed back. that is what is amazing about her, that is what so many of us
"ordinary" people lack. if there where a lot more people with an attitude like her, our
economy would not be in a slump like it is now. and there would not be so many world
problems. the world has to change and use Rell as its goal. that is the problem with just
about everything these days. we are going back to a lazy aristocracy again. and another
thing, why do you think a lot of buisness is going to China and India? because nobody
pushes back like Rell. the lack of education, the lack of determination, and the lack of
will is all because of one thing. nobody pushes like Rell. almost everybody always
"goes with the flow", she "goes against the flow"

-we would be closer than ever to

- dreamed of"

I caught the last 30 minutes of the show, and like others I had never even heard the name
Rell Sunn before. Her story was compelling and so passionately told. What a beautiful
woman she was. I was saddened yet happy when I found out she died from the cancer. Sad for
obvious reasons, but happy because of her amazing accomplishments and love for people and
life. One can only be overcome with smiles of joy when they learn about a person like
Rell, it makes sad parts not so sad. The ending caught me by surprise when Rell's cremains
were scattered in the lake and many of her fans all went out to surf in her memory. I
cried..(with a smile on my face).

I never knew Rell Sunn until my English teacher, Mr. Richards showed us the flim,Heart of
The Sea(It's really fun too, I'm from Oahu). The flim was great,it touched me a lot. It
showed me your passion could take your mind of almost everything that's going on in your
life. Rell Sunn is a great role model. I thought it was nice of her to take the kids to
France. Rell Sunn was a talented person. I wish I could be just like her. When I lern how

As a lot of the people here, I first saw this video in my English class (Mr. Richards)
Rell Sunn is very interesting, and should be considered a hero. She has most likely
inspired many children, as well as adults. She's living (was living) proof that you can
survive breast cancer way longer than the doctor says, in some cases.
It's amazing how she started surfing at such a young age and how 30 years later was
inspiring kids that age as well.

hi everyone!!!!!!!!
(i saw the movie in my english class)
i think the movie about Rell Sun was really cool. she was a great person and i think
everyone can learn a lesson from her. even tho she had cancer she still kept surfing. all
the things she did was something good.like taking the kids to France. she never never gave
up. altho she was sick she was always happy and joyful. (i wish i could be like
that)before that men were the only ones surfing. she made a way so females could surf too
and do some things men do. a lot of us know Rell did at leat one thing great. and that's
true !!!! she did a lot of things great. she made a way so women can surf, she was and is
an awesome role model, and she lived more years than expected. like Mr. Richards said
"what doesn't kill us makes us stronger!" surfing didn't kill her it made her stronger!!!
and it help her live a few more years than expected. i don't know how to say this but Rell
Sun was a really really really really great and wonderful person!!!!!!!!!

Rell Sun was quite an inspiring person. I didn't have any clue to who she was. It wasn't
until my English teacher, Mr. Richards, explained to our class who she was and what she
did, I got to know how important confidence is. Rell could have gotten depressed and shut
off the rest of the world from her, but instead, She accepted her fate and decided to help
others who are in teh same condition as her. She also stuck to her passion. Even with
breast cancer, Rell kept surfing. Like the movie said,"She had more energy than all of us
put together." She has inspired me to keep trying even when things look hopeless. For
example, when I got a grade below an A-, I usually just give up and think of it as
impossible. After watching the movie, my World History grade went down to a B+. Unlike
preceveing times, I actually did my work with utmost care and barely made it with an A-.
After waching the movie, I felt like a new man when I walked out the door. Now, I greet
challenges head-on, with no fear...unless it's somthing
REALLY dangerous, of course. Not only was she a pioneer in breast cancer treatment, she
also paved the path for other women surfers. She will be remembered for how she stood up
to fate and fought when all hope seemed lost.

5/30/03
My english teacher,Mr.Richards, show the video about Rell Sun. I thought the video was a
good lesson about living a life. Even though she lived half a life, she made it great. It
amazed me how she lived 14 years with cancer. And i hope i can live a great life she did.

Dear producers and other respected sirs who took part in making this movie happen,
I am a student at Centerville Junior High. Our English teacher, Mr.Jamie Richards, showed
us the documentary about Rell Sunn. At first, I wasn't interestd, but I soon learned how
wonderful a person, "Aunty Rell" is. I was deeply touched at her courage and confidence.
What most shocked me most is that how could a person be so happy and encouraging when she
is going through one of the most dangerous dieseases in the world. I personally think :
RELL SUN IS A PEROSN WITH NO FEAR. THE PEOPLE WHO GO ON FEAR FACTOR ARE NOTHING COMPARED
TO HER. Now after seeing the movie, I wish I could have met with her. She is truly the,
"Heart of the Sea",and the , "Queen of Makaha." I hope peoplle can be just like her and
make this world a better place to live in!

Rell's a real inspiration. She left a legency. Though she was ill, she still carried on
with her passion to surf. Rell is the type of person who really does deserve much praise

their passions through tough barriers and high obstacles. In the future I hope to like as
courageous as Rell.

"Heart of the sea" was very inspiring to me. I am a student of Jaime Richards. I think
many of the kids in his classes were inspired by that episode of Independent Lens, not

moments with their family. Rell Sun is such a great role model for people with cancer, to
live your life to the fullest even if it might be a little messed up over the years, thank
you Mr. Richards for showing me that video.

I literally just finished watching your film and I'm speechless. The mother of a close
friend and mentor of mine just passed away this last weekend from cancer and before
watching your film, I felt really helpless. I couldn't relate to my friend at all or
understand what she was going through, let alone empathize with her mother. After seeing

to understand how I can help my friend. Thank you so much for this film!

I never knew who Rell Sunn was until now, but when I finally found out, I could barelyl
believe that I didn't know earlier. Her passion for the waves, the sea, was so great, I
couldn't think of a better role model. And even with her breast cancer, she didn't spend
the rest of her life in a hostpital. She was still living her life. She proves that you
don't have to be rich or known throughout the world to have achieved a wonderful life. But
I still believe that everyone should know the story of Rell Sunn, the warrior, the role
model.

5/30/03
I really enjoyed this show. I was very inspired by it. Is there a way that I can find out
more about Rell's life. I'm an animator and I would love to do a short story related to
the person that Rell Sun was and the positive impact that she had on peoples lives.
Especially mine just within this past hour. Thanks.

I keep missing Rell Sunn! I can't wait to see "Heart of the Sea".
Back in the good 'ol days, (circa 1970's) I used to work in the Waianae High cafeteria
every morning before school. I mention to Mrs Sunn that I wish I could surf. She says, "My
daughter Rella is a really good surfer, and she has a board for sale."
So that weekend I drove the old '65 Valient over to the Sunn's house and loaded up the
board. My first thought was "I can't go surfing on this thing!" The board was HOT PINK
with a clear red skagg.
Not to long after I was at the University of Hawaii, and eventually took the hot pink
board out and learned to surf over at Ala Moana.
One day this Japanese exchange student comes to my dorm room and in broken english asked
if she could buy my surfboard. She wants to hang it in her room back in Japan.
Hmmm...$150 for board, or another weekend of peanut butter sandwiches. "Aloha Oi
surfboard".
Rell would probably laugh and say "My board is in Japan? You lolo bugga, that was one nice
board too!"
I wish I had a chance to meet her that day at her house....she was probably out surfing.

About Rell sun she lived an amazing life from being a great surfer then starting a
childrens surfing contest then from ther having breast cancer and living her dream even
from ther on.The thing i like most about reel is that no matter how sick or weak she was
or what the doctors said she kept on living her dream and inspiring other people.I myself
being a surfer am really inspired by what Reel has said and done.I remember her saing that
all the kids called her aunty Reel,at first I did not understand why but by the end of the
show I did.Reel touched so many of my classmates and I including my english teacher Jaime
Richards.Anyways I just wanted to give my input about an amazing woman whoe's done it all
Reel sun.

hi, everone
what is a good tv program? i have the answer for you all. when you are scanning for a
worthy program to see, you run into one and there the sacnning is stopped. this is how i
watched the documentry on Rell Sunn on pbs the other night. i stopped scanning and
everything else i was about to do and watched untill the last cation was flipped over on
tv.
this is the proof why pbs stations are live and well and will be for a long time.
i learned a lot about rell but more importantly, i discovered aa bit more about a decent
human being and her power of living beyond her own.
thank you to all the producers.

WHAT AN AMAZING DOCUMENTARY I WAS IN TEARS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FILM. MY HUSBAND LOVES TO
SURF AND I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS A MALE ONLY SPORT BUT RELL SUNN CHANGE THAT , NOW I WILL
TALK TO MY DAUGHTER ABOUT SURFING AND EXPLAIN TO HER THAT A HAND FULL OF WOMEN OPENED THAT
DOOR. MY HAT OFF TO THE PRODUCER YOU DID A WONDERFUL JOB AND FOR ME, I NOW KNOW THE
IMPORTANCE OF SELF EXAMINATION REGARDLESS OF FAMILY HISTORY. THANK YOU AND I HOPE YOU ARE
REWARDED FOR THIS AWESOME FILM. I HOPE PBS SHOWS IT AGAIN SO I CAN WATCH IT WITH MY ENTIRE
FAMILY..
THANK YOU
GOD BLESS

I happened upon this program while looking for something meaningful to watch the other
night and boy did I get a treat!
Rell was such an inspirational person, she maintained her beautiful positive attitude
throughout her pain and suffering. Her spirit was so much stronger than her body and I'm
sure she's still out there riding the waves.
Mahalo to Independent Lens for such a beautiful documentary of such an extraordinary
person.

I have never heard of Rell Sunn in my life. Now I can't stop thinking of her and this
beautiful video tribute. Two things I hope for: One, they replay this documentary. Two, I
sincerely hope you will offer this for sale to the general public, not just to educators,
with maybe a portion of the sale going to cancer research, and maybe a portion going
toward a scholarship for the kids at Makaha Beach. This is the most beautiful documentary
I've ever seen; the shot of the child underwater in the ocean (something no child of mine
would have been allowed to do, before seeing the video) just stops the heart. This is
going to get an Oscar nomination, I just know it. Thank you PBS, and thank you to the
producers of this film for showing your work.

I am a junior high English teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area. After watching HEART OF
THE SEA, I was so inspired that I had my students research Rell Sun and then we watched
the film in class. She lived such an amazing life! I told my students that if I could live
even half the life she lived, I'd consider myself a success. She is the ultimate role
model. She lived a life full of passion and love. I want to thank the film makers
Charlotte, Lisa and Janet for HEART OF THE SEA. Watching it, and learning about Rell, has
inspired me to become a better person. I believe it has inspired many of my students as
well.

I saw this film for the second time tonight and I could see it many more times. I am not a
surfer but I share Rell's great love of the ocean. She is one of the most courageous and
beautiful of women. She will be greatly missed in body, but her presence will always be
felt in each wave that reaches toward the land. How fortunate those who had the chance to
know her must feel. This is a beautiful and sensitive film. It brings forth the character
and love of the Hawaiian people-- an inspiration to ME and to what we all might do with
the lives we've been given--to face challenges and still keep on giving with love in our
hearts. Mahalo and Aloha

Thank you so much for this gift. Because you made this documentary I was able to learn
about an amazing woman who I had never heard of before. She touched me in such a powerful
way - I felt overwhelming gratitude for Rell's spirit - who she was while she walked this
Earth, and the legacy of open heart, connection, and stewardship of the planet she left
behind.

Plenty Aloha for showing "Heart of the Sea." I grew up in Makaha and I still can see her
surfing into a luminscent wave. A class act and a heroine in every sense of the word.

I also want to thank you for making this film, I feel like watching Rell has refreshed me
and made me see what true happiness is.I've always wanted to surf but haven't made time
for it just like my dreams-and watching her life revived my spirit in seeing that what
makes us feel alive is to be true to what we are and what we love doing and we should not
let anything stand in our way. I've also suffered an illness that has like she said become
a part of your life but what really inspired me is that it didn't become her life, which
is what alot of people do is let it rule their life-but she showed me that if we find
something we love doing and just do it like you do breathing-you live even when your
dying-you don't have to die.

I live know where near an ocean and have not yet had the chance to experience surfing, but
is something I'm absolutely longing to do. After seeing the documentary you did on Rell
Sun I was so inspired. There are certain qualties that make people stand out from the
rest. Rell possessed all of them. Her freehanded nature, her flair, her inner spirituality
and outer exotic beauty all truly makes me believe that Rell will always live on not only
in our hearts, but through the people in the world put here to do amazing things, and make
the world a better place. There is a much more superior place for Rell perhaps in a more
perfect setting where oceans are warm and the waves are always fantastic. The film makers
are just as special as Rell for taking notice of the more important things in life. Thanks
for making this film, it was absolutely moving and made me want to be a better, more
helpful women in this crazy place which I call home. Good for Rell for living out her
dreams, not many people do!

Before I awoke from an unplanned nap, I heard the music. It carried me back to the years
we lived in Hawaii. I heard the surf and I was sure I was still dreaming. Then I opened my
eyes and saw the blue of the water, then Rell, and I knew this was the documentary I was
waiting for. The photography, sound, and story were all magical and rich, as Rell was and
is an incredibly inspiring woman. Her spirit was clear, focused, and generous--concepts
that leapt from the screen. She impacted life in so many facets! You did a wonderful job
showing the utter connection between the people of Hawaii to each other as a community and
to the beloved land and sea. I hope to continue to learn from Rell's example as my husband
faces his recent diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Thank you for sharing this inspirationly
woman's stories with the world.

Lisa, Congratulations! Your documentary of Rell was one of the best I have seen. Your
magic brought her into our home for an intimate visit that will last a life time. I loved
how you were able to give us a powerful glimpse into her passionate zest for life and
people. Rells relationship with mother earth; healing waters, spirit, culture, dance
culminated into her love and oneness with surfing. Her desperate fight to live, people who
loved her, Izzy, honoring Rell (an Icon honoring an Icon) brought tears to my eyes. You're
right, Rell did return to the sea happily surfing the waves. I love Hawaii and visit
yearly. I will stop for a quiet tribute. Thank You for such a magnificent and intimate
portrayal. Nickie
