Talkback

Submit your thoughts on JULY '64.

We invite you to respond to the questions below or add your comments. Selected submissions will be posted on our Talkback page, so check back regularly and join the discussion.
  • The filmmakers believe that, beyond the story of the rebellion in Rochester, JULY '64 was created to, “provide attention, and give visibility to the conditions within many modern American cities.” Does the film achieve that goal? If so, how? What parallels do you see in U.S. cities today—are uprisings inevitable?

  • Looking at the progress made in Rochester since 1964—better African American community organization, more job opportunities and greater participation in civic life—do you think the uprising of July 1964 had a positive outcome? Why or why not?

  • In JULY '64 Cornell Professor Dr. James E. Turner said of society today, “There is still the desire to define advantage and social status around race.” Do you agree?
