Latin America’s proximity
to the United States has resulted
in the blending of Latino art
forms with American culture for
decades. From the graffiti art
popular in transitional neighborhoods
to the commissioned works of name
artists, murals have become an
important public art form across
the socio-economic spectrum. And
home altars, practiced in Mexico
for centuries, have become more
common in American homes as well
as museums and galleries.
One of the newest body art trends
sweeping the country is called
mehndi, a centuries-old tradition
in Middle Eastern, Southeast Asian
and North African countries like
the West Bank, India and Morocco.
In the past few years, pop culture
icons artists such as Madonna
and Gwen Stefani have adorned
themselves with these temporary
henna tattoos.
