Nominated for an Oscar in 2002, Lagaan
is India's first nod since director Mira Nair's
Salaam Bombay! was nominated in 1989. Unlike
Nair's film, Lagaan comes straight out
of Bollywood and boasts six sudsy musical numbers,
an epic storyline and a running time of three hours,
45 minutes. Critics have lauded the film for toning
down the “cheese” factor and revving
up the plot without losing the signature Bollywood
flair and spectacle. Moulin Rouge director
Baz Luhrmann pronounced it "David Lean meets
Busby Berkeley."
Producer and star Aamir Khan may be virtually unknown
to American filmgoers, but his star shines brightly
around the world, as does his status as an international
superhunk. The film was the costliest Bollywood
production ever made at the time, carrying a $5
million-plus price tag, but it also brought in $15
million at the box office, setting sales records
in 2002. |
