Listen to an audio clip of “Jaan Penechaan Ho” from Gumnaan (also featured in Ghostworld)
American audiences paying attention at the opening credits of the 2003 critical darling Ghost World caught Thora Birch's character shimmying to a goofy Indian production number playing on her TV. Turns out the number is from an obscure 1965 Bollywood thriller called Gumnaam, a psychedelic, musical extravaganza ripped straight from Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians.

While the film doesn't rate on any ten-best-of-Bollywood lists, it's a fun slice of genre and an example of how tidbits of foreign cultural formats are introduced into the American cultural fray. For a taste, rent the DVD edition of Ghost World, which features the clip from Gumnaan, a "music video" of the ‘60s boogaloo to the song titled Jaan Penechaan Ho.
