The late African drum master, Nigerian-born Babatunde Olatunji, was perhaps one of the most revered percussionists in the world. His drumming style grew out of sakara, another of the traditional Yoruba forms. Olatunji released his first album, Drums of Passion in 1959. He went on to teach and record with some of the most influential artists of the 20th century, including Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, with whom Olatunji collaborated on Planet Drum in the 1990s.
