One of the biggest hits ever to sweep the African continent is a song called “Sweet Mother,” released in 1976 by Prince Nico Mbarga and Rocafil Jazz. After being dropped by recording label EMI and having the song rejected by several other labels, the band released “Sweet Mother” through a local distributor, only to sell more than 13 million copies. The song is still popular today. While Prince Nico Mbarga called his musical style "panko," many consider his music a descendant of the highlife tradition.
