- The immigrants profiled in the series have brought "cultural riches" such as mural art and family recipes to the United States—traditions that have been popularized and modified as they enter a new context and country. What cultural traditions have you and your family participated in and inherited from former immigrants?
- Many recent immigrants experience homesickness and culture shock, further exacerbated by factors such as language barriers and isolation. How important do you feel access to one's immigrant community is in easing the transition of resettling? At what times in your life have you felt homesickness or culture shock? How did you deal with it?
- Poorer immigrants often try to build a new life in communities that have mixed feelings about their presence. Do you think these realities are antithetical to the notion that America is a "melting pot," welcoming all immigrants? Did meeting the "new Americans" in the series change your perspective on immigrants, and if so, how?
