There are millions of young people who do not have ANY knowledge of the Funk, much less the P-Funk. Our youth of today has no connection to the roots of music, whether it be HipHop, Blues, Rock or even Country. The work done on PBS is a tool which should be required watching for our young people (under 30)... I am proud that as a white male of 58, I love the Funk and my daughter who is 30 loves the P-Funk and we both love to get Funked up.

Ms. Smith, I loved the film. It was filled with unknown facts and did much to demystify the group. I'm sure you could have filled many more hours. I thought it was colorful and represented the fun in funk. I would have loved to see more on the politics of the lyrics, but it was enjoyable to watch something that wasn't so heavy laden. So much of the music profiled was obscure to those who only know the hits and that was a good thing. And the build up to the "Flashlight" moment provided a big pay-off for the audience. It really paid tribute to some of the most creative voices in the music industry. Thanks and keep up the great work sister.

Fantastic program that really showed the development of THE FUNK. Can catch George Clinton live at the Church of Love and Universal Music (www.ilovemusicchurch.com) in rural PA in summers .

I was a teenager sneaking into sunrise concerts at Soldier's Field when George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelics was at its best. Once you heard them, there was no turning back. Yvonne Smith and PBS did a commendable job. I applaud you.

What a great documentary! I've admired George Clinton and the gang and enjoyed their music for many years. This program gave me the opportunity to learn what was behind the music and their genius. Continued success for Independent Lens.

What an outstanding look into that phenomenom called Parliament Funkadelic! This film should be required viewing for all serious fans and students of any type of music. Watching this film brought back so many good memories (where's my flashlight and my Bop Gun?). I'll be pulling out the old albums, I think a personal P-Funk concert is in order this evening! Thanks for an outstanding special.

I was first introduced to George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic at the tender age of 6. My aunt sneaked me to a Parliament Funkadelic concert with her in DC. Although terrified, screaming and hollering seeing the Mothership comming down from the heavens, seeing Gary Shider with the wings on his back and the platform shoes and George in that long white coat, the Funkadelic seed had been sown.
Watching the film brought back such memories. I can now relate what I saw then to what I understood as an adult. I vividly remember the album covers, the cartoons and graphics which was entertaining besides listening to the music. Seeing the group evolve from Parliament Funkadelic to the P-Funk All Stars the music gets better and better!
Sampling in the early days of hip-hop was the bridge from their generations (George Clinton, James Brown and others)to ours. Some looked at sampling as stealing. I saw it as paying tribute, honoring the fathers of music as their offspring. No matter how far we reach in music, we didn't get there alone. Hip-hop is the testament of our journey in music.
Kudos to Yvonne Smith and Independent Lens for a well produced and directed documentary. I was so disappointed with some of the recent documentaries because it didn't have the impact and lacked the punch in telling our story. This one nailed it! Job well done! Yvonne Smith has restored my faith in documentaries again!

I have been a fan of parliament funkedelic since I was a kid. I attended a concert back in the 70,s and I was fortunate enough to attend the concert at the Sunfest in West Palm Beach and get my Paliament live album autograghed. I would love to meet the legendary George Clinton. He is a definite icon and I'm glad that the band is getting the recognition they surely deserve.

Just wanted to give props on last night's P-Funk documentary. Loved the animation, the interviews, and most of all, the concert footage. Now all we need is an expanded DVD with uncut performances.
Until then, much respect to PBS, Independent Lens, and most importantly, Yvonne Smith and Harlene Freezer, for getting this film made and aired. Funk used to be a bad word, now everything's on the One.

Well done documentary! Parliament was a HUGE influence on my development with the powerful idea that a person could be smart, nasty, deep, goofy, earthchanging and time wasting all at the same time. George gave us all not just permission to be ourselves, but a lust for seeing what mixture of creativity the Funk could evoke from us. No limits. As Funkadelic so perfectly put it over three decades ago ...
"The infinite intelligence within you knows the answers. It's nature is to respond to your thoughts. You rise as high as your dominant aspiration. You descend to the level of your lowest concept of yourself. Free your mind and your ass will follow. The kingdom of heaven is within."

I was a doo-wop singer in 1968 in high school and we did the parliments songs, but I was stationed in michican in 1970 and they were giving a concert now named the funkadelics, at that point i was converted to a funkateer. I bought the Maggot Brain album, took it to germany and turned the mother out. i think they should rerelease it I dont believe most poeple heard it cause it explains whats a funkadelic from keep running mississippi with a pocket full of funky dollar bills trying to see queen tin b**** to free your mind.

The music of Parliament and Funkadelic shaped my childhood as a teen growing up in Claremont California; and still to this day!
I raise the Funk Flag High and proclaim to all as an original Funkateer from the 'Old Skool Daze' and proclaim:
"Gloryhallastoopid, Pin the Tail on the Funky!"

All you guys in Atlanta - Hi from Scott Bywater's Ma - he went to a better place in May of 2003 and I am sure he is enjoying the acknowledgement you are finally getting. And to Manny in Boston, I agree - would love to get this on a DVD - Scott's daughter needs it. She met many of you on Stone Mountain at your July 4th picnic back in '99 or thereabouts.
Keep making music!

I must equate P-funk the genuis to Naked Lunch, it's social relevance, primal rythms great power and artisitic integrity in a profound search for true values. The destruction and creation of people consumed by their addictions and obssessions in this here Republic. And then comes that moment GRACE- the brillant flash from the Mother Ship. Remeber the story of Saul before he was Paul on the road to Damascus. It's like when I listen to Miles, Armstrong, Coltrane, Hendrix, Mayfield, it stirs my creativity for the data of everything and nothing that was all and could be. And everything and anything that is. Thanks for the FUNK George.....
LIVE LONG AND FUNK....

My all time favorite album is Parliment Live. My brother got it as a birthday present when I was maybe 12. It open my eyes to all types of music. One Nation there is a song "Who says a Funk Band Cant Rock." You can play this music and still rock any party.

I was born in 1952 so I grew up during the era of the Motown sound, although I liked the sound of their artist, it wasn't until I heard Maggot Brain with Eddie Hazels stupendous guiter licks that I know I had found the band for me. At one point in I had all of their albums, the whole U.S. Funk Mob'but lost them and now I am trying to get them all again, but most of all I would give my right n** to get the inside cover of Maggot Brain, the photo is a classic, if you know where I can obtain it or a poster of it please let me know.

and it came to pass ...
one day, Mike Brecker wandered into "the Tunes" after a recording session across the street at Ladyland.
Looking a bit dazed, he asked my friend: "Dyou know this George Clinton guy?"
Brecker was shown the recordings on hand in the store. He then remarked: "I think this guy may be a genius..."

Thank you is not enough, it is not enough for George Clinton (The Holy Ghost of Funk) , it is not enough for Bootsy Collins (The Pope of Funk), it is not enough for Bernie Worrill (The Rock of Funk, upon which the church is built). Funk is a religion and way of life.

WOW! What a show. The music speaks for itself. As a 41 year old, I'm trying to get my children to listen to different styles of music verse the same 4-5 songs the radio plays.
We witnessed HISTORY & it's exciting. We got a chance to peek into the world of FUNK.

When I say I was mesmerized by this display, that doesn't begin to cover it. Sure, I'd heard of PFunk, knew of Clinton, used to listen to "Maggot Brain" very Friday night. Never knew the level, the impact, the Sound of music like I heard it tonight. I am a 30 yr old white girl from Ohio and I tell you, I hear the Mothership Calling. It was incredibly well put together. Thank you for schoolin me in the fine art of Funk.

I only wish this program was 2 hours long instead of one because it was OUTSTANDING!!!
Yvonne Smith, this is the finest documentary I've seen in a very long time. The commentary was imformative and the amimation enhanced the presentation without getting in the way of the most important thing...THE MUSIC.
I can't thank you enough. You represented "da funk" like a true soldier in the funk army.

I was funkin' to these guys back in '72 through about '79. I think George Clinton is an absolute genius, though a little demented. I'm so very pleased that this documentary was created. George has never gotten all the credit he deserved.
There will never be another group to rival the P-Funk thang. They were amazing. Thank you so much for making this documentary!

I watched the show and it was awesome!!!! It took me back to my childhood memories of my older brother who was 5 years my senior was and still is the ultimate P-Funk fan. I remember when Bootsy Collins and George Clinton came to Charlotte in early 80's. He begged my mother to let him go to the WGIV radio station to meet them. He was probably about 17 and I was around 12. He was so proud to come home with the pictures of everyone on the tour. Not to mention the Sir Nose Photo and the Funkadelic glasses!!! As the little sister, I could not understand what his love affair with this music was all about. I was the all time bratty little sister when he would turn the volume up to the max. I always screamed for him to turn it down. :-) Now, I laugh about it and turn it up too!!! Oh man!!!! We would fight the entire time he played his music...but he loved this music so much. Now, that we are in our 30 and 40's we watched the show and all we could do was laugh and flash back on old times. What a joy. I wish we could go back to the nights when Mom was not home and me and big brother were home alone fighting over George Clinton and the MotherShip!!!! As I listen to the music now, I understand now...the freedom, the love of music and the love of self was what it was all about.
I would love to be able to purchase this video and give to my big brother. It would be the best gift I could ever give to this George Clinton fan. Please make it available soon. I wish he could meet all of you again and have a then and now photo to add to his collection. He just loves the music and the history of it. He was, is, and will always be the ultimate P-Funk Fan of Charlotte NC.

George Clinton has endured for longer than most. He is a true genius in many forms; from his music, his views, his beliefs, his Art! Thank you for the proper respect this most deserving Artist is receiving! He and his ever changing and growing band are a deep inspiration and FUN! Many fallen comrades will never be forgotten; Eddie Hazel and Glen Goins especially. Glen's brother Kevin has some never released tunes of Glen's and it is critical we all help get these tunes recorded in his honor. Thank you for showcasing the most sampled man in rap/hip-hop...and The Grandmaster of FUNK!

I am forever grateful to PBS for putting on a special as amazing as this. I have not seen the documentary yet, but if it is in the style of previous PBS specials on R&B/soul/pop music, this will be a classic for sure. I am a die-hard Parliament/Funkadelic fan and can vividly recall my first encounter with Dr. Funkenstein. My mother owned the LP "Clones of Dr. Funkestein" and I was engulfed by the grooves of " Do That Stuff," "Dr. Funkenstein" and "Gamin' On Ya!" She would tell me of the amazing concerts that took place in the 70s and let me know it was nothing she had never seen or witnessed before. I can believe her. I totally wish I was born back in that era just to witness those moments with her. But all is not lost, they visited a homecoming celebration at the University of Alabama when I was in college and can recall the excitement and joy we all experienced that night. Whew, almost had a set of flashbacks right then. With saying all of that, I cannot wait to see the documentary. My VCR will be taping for sure.

Hard-core P-funkers are hard to please and we'll know if anyone's faking the funk in this documentary. That being said, I'm eager to check out the interviews with Garry Shider and Dawn Silva... I've never seen or heard them interviewed before.

I've seen a copy of this release and although it's pretty well done and does have some quality footage, Hard-core Maggots will already know most of the info. Also, they could have done without the cartoonish narration. In all, there are still a few surprises and it's great to FINALLY see it done, in one good presentation. Nice to see The Mob getting their props before they all pass! Why that crook Armen Bolodian was included escapes me though....

It's about time that the Good Doctor Funkenstein was recognized with a full documentary.
Clinton, Bootsy, Bernie & Garry revoloutionized R&B from a 'stand there & move' scene to a 'Get off your @## and jam' party' !
The genius, creativity & wicked imagination of George Clinton is truly a key part of music history that will never be 'cloned.'
Thanks PBS for sharing the funk with the world !
