- Attending parole hearings can evoke trauma for victims of violent crime. Police investigator Georgia Meloy says, “The perpetrators, at some point, are going to be set free. Why should the victim be in prison as long as the perpetrator? Why should they have to be assaulted over and over again with the facts of what happened to them?" Do you believe that the criminal justice system could be reformed in a way that would recognize the rights of both victims and prisoners?
- According to filmmaker Liz Oakley, Joanna Katz was “in many ways, the exception to the rule in a series of injustices. Joanna represents a best-case scenario in the aftermath of such a horrific experience.” Do you agree with this statement?
- Joanna Katz says: ”I’ve seen how difficult it is for victims to come forward to report a sexual assault… Telling my story is essential to my role in changing the system and providing a voice for victims.” How important is it for victims to come forward, in spite of judicial system proceedings that could victimize them again?
