Reservation Warparties

L-R:

Close-up shot of a Native American man with long straight black hair; his expression is serious, his eyes look slightly downward and to the right

Three Native American men sit on the back of a red flatbed truck drinking beer, a water tower stands behind them against a clear blue sky

Close-up shot of a young Native American man with short black hair, small hoop earrings and a hint of a mustache and goatee, looking directly at the camera, not smiling

We were never warriors. We were prisoners held captive by alcohol.

The Short

On another sun-scorched afternoon on the reservation, a 10-year-old Lakota boy asks his uncle if he has ever seen a dead body. The question sparks a conversation about the uncle’s role in a close friend’s death. Based on a true story, RESERVATION WARPARTIES is a snapshot of reservation life revealing how alcoholism and poverty have ravaged the Native American spirit. At the same time, the film offers hope for the future, as the boy imagines his people recapturing their proud past.

Filmmaker Bio

Headshot of Angelique Midthunder, a Native American woman with long dark hair and dark eyes looks over her shoulder at the camera, her mouth closed with a slight smile

Angelique Midthunder
Director/Producer

Angelique Midthunder began her career in the film industry on a whim when she answered an ad in the paper for a “girl who can gallop a horse bareback.” This open call landed her a lead role in a Japanese feature film. From there, Midthunder went on to travel extensively in Japan, working as an actor, dancer and model. Upon returning to the U.S., Midthunder turned her sights to casting; enjoying the experience of selecting characters and watching scenes brought to life. For seven years Midthunder worked booking talent for movies such as Tigerland, Jeepers Creepers, Hidalgo, and for major television networks including NBC, HBO and FOX, focusing on a combination of creative selection and cultural realism in her work.

Most recently, Midthunder started her own production company and has taken on the task of producing a series of public service announcements for wild horse preservation featuring a host of celebrities. RESERVATION WARPARTIES is her first narrative film.
