In this excerpt from the Independent Lens film Farmer/Veteran, Alex Sutton, an Iraq combat veteran with PTSD, spends time with a fellow veteran named Fred Curtis who has a family and who, like Alex, also wants to start his own farm. Alex shows them his own farm and gives advice about raising chickens before the conversation shifts to talking about the various medications they’ve been prescribed (like Topamax and Fluoxetine), with varying degrees of success. Both men suffer severe mood swings, going, as Fred’s wife puts it, “from zero to 60.” Alex talks about the “little dude in your brain that’s supposed to tell right from wrong, mine’s on a beach somewhere and won’t come back.”
