In East of Salinas we met a bright boy and his dedicated teacher, both sons of migrant farm workers. With parents who are busy working long hours in the fields, third grader Jose Ansaldo often turns to his teacher, Oscar Ramos, for guidance. But Jose is undocumented. While he worries more for his parents than himself, like many migrant children, as Jose grows older he begins to understand the complexities of the situation before him. In this short, we also see Jose and his classmates get to visit San Francisco’s Exploratorium science museum for the very first time, at an age, Mr Ramos points out, that they can absorb everything and be inspired by it. The film then revisits Jose four years later, with Mr. Ramos checking in on his former student, who is now in middle school but no closer to resolution or reassurance on his immigration status.
