In this excerpt from the Independent Lens film SEED: The Untold Story, famed scientist Jane Goodall talks about how seeds work and spread is nothing short of magic. With animation and time-lapse photography we see the magic in the way they are brought to life after hitching a ride with an animal or being digested by one (Goodall points out that Darwin was amazed that a seed grew after it had been 21 hours in the stomach of an owl), or activated through fire. Dennis Klocek, a scientist, teacher, and gardener, here calls a seed a “doorway between the life of the old plant and its gift to the new plant.” It is a process of nothing less than reincarnation.
