In this clip from the Independent Lens film Unrest, filmmaker Jennifer Brea, who suffers from myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.), commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome, shows us the ups and downs, from hopeful to hopeless, when she seemingly finds a cure to her debilitating illness, in the form of an antiviral drug called Valcyte. With her husband Omar by her side, Jen is able to leave the house for the first time in ages, and even gets to see a parade for her alma mater Princeton, before the symptoms return with a vengeance. She tries to speak and “the sounds that would come out of my mouth would be gibberish.”
