In this excerpt from the Independent Lens film What Lies Upstream, investigative filmmaker Cullen Hoback travels to rural West Virginia to talk to coal mining families about the loss of clean drinking water in their neck of the woods, after a disastrous 2014 chemical spill and the effects of contaminated coal mining sludgy run-off. Brown water in their tub, piping in cleaner water in trucks, it’s all the stuff of nightmares. “When I wake up in the morning, I think if I’m still living it’s a great day,” says one retired miner.
