SPORTS: GET IN THE GAME

RAW FOOTAGE

IRIS

I think a lot of times coaches only focus on the good players. They really should be spending more of their time with the people that aren't that good. But, even in gym class it was always the people that played outside sports that got to be captains of the team, that got to pick other people… But, the coaches really have to make an effort to reach out to the kids that they feel that might be straying away from wanting to be in sports.

CAMILLA

They make it as a diss—like "oh, you play like a girl" like someone said earlier. They’re saying "oh, you shoot like a girl, you play like a girl, you throw like a girl." It feels so degrading…It's chauvinistic. And you feel like "Gee, well I guess girls are supposed to suck compared to guys." It's really degrading. It feels like you can't really accomplish anything because you're not a guy. So then you feel left out because you're a girl. But things that are coming out now like the women's NBA help girls realize that they have something to look forward to, to strive to achieve.

CESAR

Everybody has to start off somewhere. You don't start off the best. I just say to myself, "Man, maybe if they let me play once in a while, maybe I could get better, maybe one day I'll give ‘em a challenge." But you can't really let things like that get to you because when things like that happen, you just got to go out and find something else to do. Even when they don’t pick me, I don't just sit there and feel sorry for myself. I go out and find something else to do. I'll go play some handball, I'll go find a baseball game to get into or something like that. Find something I'm good at and just practice at that and just make myself better. But I never let anything get to me though.

The best is when you learn a new trick. It's like an adrenaline rush. But at the same time its just makes you feel really happy. You are gonna keep falling and then, if you just stick with it... when you finally get it, it's like an achievement, in some ways... of finally getting that trick. It feels unreal. And that's what keeps you going.
