"YOU HAVE THE POWER" BULLYING VIDEO
TRANSCRIPT

In Olney, MD Sherwood H.S. students worked with Park M.S. students to write, shoot and edit this video about what bystanders should do if they see someone is being bullied. It was broadcast to every classroom at Parks and a discussion followed about ways bullying could be prevented.

Kids v/o while walking down the hallway:

v/o 1: As many as 160,000 students may stay home on any given day because they're afraid of being bullied.

v/o 2: Bullying is aggressive behavior that intends to cause harm and is usually repeated over time.

v/o 3: Bullying happens in schools everywhere, everyday…not just in big cities.

v/o 4: Take a stand and lend a hand - stop bullying now.

Vignette 1:

Kat and Robert walk over to a row of lockers, one of which has a sign that says "Freak" taped to it.

Kat: Haha, look at that!

Robert: Yeah, that's hilarious.

Melanie walks over and sadly pulls the "Freak" sign off her locker .

Kat: So, anyways, that movie…she like took people down a well and killed them!

Melanie: Wasn't it scary when she climbed up the well?

Kat: You're such a freak! Ugh! (to Robert) Why was she butting into our conversation?

Robert: I don't know!

Kat and Robert walk away, leaving Melanie at the lockers.

Kat: That's so mean! How could anybody do something like that?

Robert: I don't know…

Kat: Exactly.

Melanie walks over and sadly pulls the "Freak" sign off her locker.

Kat: Hey, don't let it get you down. It happened to me before, too.

Melanie: Really? What did you do about it?

Kat: I just kept my spirits up. I think you should do that too.

Melanie: Okay, thanks.

Robert: Hey, come on, let's all go watch a movie at my house.

The three of them walk down the hallway together.

The three boys walk past Robert and Josh slams his locker shut.

Josh: Haha, loser!

Robert: Hey, what was that for?

Robert: Pretty hard.

Sami: Yeah…see you later!

Robert: See you later.

Mady; Don't worry about it, they're just being bullies.

Robert: Thanks.

Kids v/o while walking down the hallway:

v/o 1: If you are bullied, tell a trusted adult.

v/o 2: Once a bully, always a bully…this is not true. People can change.

v/o 3: A large number of children who are bullied never tell a teacher. Why not?

v/o 4: Did you know that girls bully just as much as boys do?

Vignette 3:

Three girls walk out of a bathroom.

Alexis: Did you see what Lisa was wearing?

Jessica: I wonder if she got it out of a trash can!

Sarah: I know, how ugly!

Melanie and Cindy overhear them as they walk by.

Melanie: Oh my god, did you hear what they were saying?

Cindy: I know, how could they say something so mean?

Mady grabs the hat back from the other boys and gives it to Travis.

Mady: (to Travis) Sorry about that, man. (to the other boys) Leave him alone!

(End Segment)

Mady turns to the camera, as the entire group assembles behind him:

Mady: Many different forms of bullying occur every day in schools across the country.

Lauren: The examples we chose was name-calling, talking behind people's backs, slamming lockers, mean notes and teasing.

Mady: People don't realize that bullying really hurts people.

Lauren: But if a person takes a stand and makes a change, then that'll make a really big difference.
