Autobiography, Excerpts on Slavery

Jefferson wrote his autobiography late in life, as he said, “for my own ready reference, and for the information of my family.” In this passage he discussed legislation he sponsored early in his career to end the slave trade. He went on to argue that while blacks must be free, “...the two races, equally free, cannot live in the same government.”
