Lost Boys of Sudan documentary producer Megan Mylan and one of the "boys," Santino Majok Chuor, explain the backstory. American Dreams' executive producer Jonathan Prince and star Tom Verica discuss the show's popularity.
Tom Verica
Actor Tom Verica appreciates the Philadelphia setting of his period drama, NBC's American Dreams. The Philly native left home to pursue an acting career in New York. He founded a theater company and produced, directed and performed. His big break came with his Broadway debut in Prelude to a Kiss, which led to a recurring role on TV's L.A. Law. Verica has appeared in such TV shows as Providence, Frasier and NYPD Blue. Despite his newfound notoriety, Verica continues to explore directing.
Santino Majok Chuor
Santino Majok Chuor is one of the central characters of the documentary Lost Boys of Sudan. As a result of the Sudan civil war, Chuor was orphaned in the late '80s when his village was destroyed. He fled and, with 20,000 others, made it to safety in Kenya. In '01, as part of 4,000 'lost boys' given priority refugee status in America, he ended up in Houston, TX. Facing many challenges, including racism from blacks as well as whites, Chuor learned that one doesn't have to be an orphan to be lost in America.
Megan Mylan
Megan Mylan is a documentary filmmaker who's produced programs for Stanford University and the Lucas Educational Foundation. Her credits include Batidania: Power in the Beat, Inside the Tobacco Deal for PBS and Brazil 2000 for the BBC. Mylan previously worked with Ashoka, a non-profit organization that works to develop social entrepreneurship around the world. Her documentary, Lost Boys of Sudan, follows two refugees on their journey from Africa to America and challenges the issues of immigration and foreign aid.
Jonathan Prince
Jonathan Prince started his showbiz career as an actor. The Harvard grad grew tired of waiting for the phone to ring and decided to try writing. With a solid future on the other side of the camera, he's racked up script consultant, writing and directing credits on various TV series including Blossom, Party of Five and Camp Nowhere. Prince is passionate about his latest drama, American Dreams, saying the series shows America during the most dramatic socio-cultural revolution in history.
