Historian John Hope Franklin, author of the classic text From Slavery to Freedom, reflects on why he chose his career and says he wants his readers to ask themselves what they see in the mirror.

Dr. John Hope Franklin is the dean of African American historians. He earned his Ph.D. at Harvard and has taught at a number of institutions, including his alma mater, Fisk University. A Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, he has served on many national commissions and written numerous books, including From Slavery to Freedom, which has been published in several languages. At age 90, the Oklahoma native is Professor Emeritus of History at Duke University. His newly released autobiography is entitled Mirror to America.
