Khaled Hosseini, author of A Thousand Splendid Suns, reflects on his transition from M.D. to successful novelist. Country music star Toby Keith talks about his dream of longevity and performs a song from his new CD.
Khaled Hosseini
Dr. Khaled Hosseini practiced medicine before giving in to his first love—writing. As a 4th grader in his native Afghanistan, he read Persian poetry and Farsi translations of novels. After his family received political asylum in the U.S. in '80, Hosseini earned his M.D. in '93 and began his first novel while working as an internist. The Kite Runner, one of the first Afghan novels written in English, was an international best seller, published in 38 countries. A Thousand Splendid Suns is his latest.

Superstar Toby Keith is more than busy. Billboard's top-selling country artist in '04 and ‘05, he has been featured in a national TV ad campaign, owns a chain of restaurants, filmed motion pictures, launched a record label and just released a new CD, 'Big Dog Daddy.' After playing football with a USFL farm team, the Oklahoma native decided to focus on music. He did double duty by playing local bars and working in oil fields. Keith has since earned both commercial success and artistic acclaim.
