Political theorist Benjamin Barber explains why citizens have to take their politics beyond just voting. Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Michael McDonald talks about remaking classic songs and also performs a track from his newest CD, "Soul Speak."
Benjamin Barber
Benjamin Barber is a noted political theorist who consults regularly with institutions and leaders in the U.S. and Europe. A professor at the University of Maryland, he's also Director of CivWorld, a project of the school's Democracy Collaborative. His books include Jihad vs. McWorld and Consumed. Barber also co-wrote the prize-winning CBS/PBS series, The Struggle for Democracy. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard and was a founding editor of the distinguished international quarterly, Political Theory.
Michael McDonald
Michael McDonald's unique voice was first noticed in the early '70s when he was a guest vocalist with Steely Dan, but it was the Doobie Brothers that made him a "blue-eyed soul" singing star. He's gone on to enjoy a successful solo career, winning multiple Grammys, and also providing backing vocals and doing duets with many other artists, including Kenny Loggins and Patti LaBelle. In '03, McDonald received a star on the Walk of Fame in his St. Louis hometown. His latest project is "Soul Speak."
