Since making her debut with the American Ballet Theatre in '64, Judith Jamison has become an icon of American dance. She was a principal dancer in the Alvin Ailey company, where she remained for 15 years to great acclaim. She's toured worldwide, starred in a hit Broadway musical, choreographed for various companies and founded her own troupe. When named Ailey artistic director, Jamison became the first African American woman to direct a major modern dance company. Her many awards include the National Medal of Arts.
