HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON
The former First Lady of both Arkansas and of the nation, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, becoming the first female senator to represent the state of New York.

CHRIS DODD
Elected to Congress in 1974, Sen. Chris Dodd served three terms in the House of Representatives. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980 and is now in his sixth term.

JOHN EDWARDS
In 1998, John Edwards served as Senator for North Carolina for one term. He ran for his party's presidential nomination in the 2004 election and was the nominee for vice president in that year's general election.

Mike Gravel served in the Alaska House of Representatives and went on to represent Alaska in the U.S. Senate from 1969-81. He is best known for releasing the Pentagon Papers.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich became the youngest mayor of a major American city when he was elected in Cleveland at age 31. After a decade-long break from politics, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996.

BARACK OBAMA
The youngest candidate in the presidential race, Barack Obama is Illinois' junior senator. He is the sole African American currently serving in the Senate and only the fifth African American senator in U.S. history.

BILL RICHARDSON
Gov. Bill Richardson spent 14 years in Congress representing New Mexico. He has also served as Ambassador to the United Nations and U.S. Secretary of Energy. He was elected as governor of New Mexico in 2002.
