SAM BROWNBACK

Sen. Sam Brownback was appointed the youngest Secretary of Agriculture in Kansas history before serving one term in the House of Representatives. He is currently in his second term as senator.

Former Mayor, New York
RUDY GIULIANI

Prior to leading the nation’s largest city, Rudolph Giuliani was the Associate Attorney General in the Reagan administration and U.S. Attorney in New York. He ran for Senate in 2000 before withdrawing for health reasons.

HUCKABEE

Former Governor, Arkansas
MIKE HUCKABEE

Mike Huckabee won a four year-term as Arkansas’ Lieutenant Governor in 1994, but became governor after his predecessor resigned two years later. He subsequently served two full terms as governor.

HUNTER

Congressman, California
DUNCAN HUNTER

Rep. Duncan Hunter is serving his 13th and final term as a congressman from California. He previously worked as an attorney and is one of two Vietnam War veterans running for the nomination.

MCCAIN

Senator, Arizona
JOHN MCCAIN

Sen. John McCain followed a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy with two terms as a congressman before winning his Senate seat in 1986. He is one of the two Vietnam War veteran presidential hopefuls, and this is his second run for the White House.

PAUL

Congressman, Texas
RON PAUL

Rep. Ron Paul first ran for president on the Libertarian ticket in 1988. Trained as a doctor, he served four terms in Congress before returning to his medical practice in 1985. He was elected to the House again in 1996 and is currently serving his fifth consecutive term.

ROMNEY

Former Governor, Massachusetts
MITT ROMNEY

Venture capitalist Mitt Romney first entered politics with an unsuccessful run for the Senate against Edward M. Kennedy. After organizing the 2002 Olympics, he was elected governor of Massachusetts and served one term.

TANCREDO

Congressman, Colorado
TOM TANCREDO

Rep. Tom Tancredo served two terms in the Colorado legislature before serving in the Department of Education during the 1980s and early 90s. He is currently in his fourth term as a congressman.

THOMPSON

Former Senator, Tennessee
FRED THOMPSON

Fred Thompson made his mark as an attorney and film actor before winning a special election to fill then-Vice President and former Tennessee senator Al Gore’s old seat. He served nine years in the Senate before returning full-time to film and television work.

At age 29, Sen. Joe Biden became one of the youngest people ever elected to the U.S. Senate. He is currently serving his sixth term and is Delaware's longest-serving senator.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

The former First Lady of both Arkansas and of the nation, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, becoming the first female senator to represent the state of New York.

Dodd

Senator, Connecticut
CHRISTOPHER DODD

Elected to Congress in 1974, Sen. Christopher Dodd served three terms in the House of Representatives. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980 and is now in his sixth term.

EDWARDS

Former Senator, North Carolina
JOHN EDWARDS

In 1998, John Edwards served as Senator for North Carolina for one term. He ran for his party's presidential nomination in the 2004 election and was the nominee for vice president in that year's general election.

GRAVEL

Former Senator, Alaska
MIKE GRAVEL

Mike Gravel served in the Alaska House of Representatives and went on to represent Alaska in the U.S. Senate from 1969-81. He is best known for releasing the Pentagon Papers.

KUCINICH

Congressman, Ohio
DENNIS KUCINICH

Rep. Dennis Kucinich became the youngest mayor of a major American city when he was elected in Cleveland at age 31. After a decade-long break from politics, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996.

OBAMA

Senator, Illinois
BARACK OBAMA

The youngest candidate in the presidential race, Barack Obama is Illinois' junior senator. He is the sole African American currently serving in the Senate and only the fifth African American senator in U.S. history.
