Rep. Joe Barton

Republican - TX

If you're a young man or young woman and you take steroids to be more competitive in your sport, it affects the way your body develops.

Rep. Joe Barton

Q: Why does steroid use concern you so much?

We're not out to get baseball, we being the Congress. We serve as the people's servants here in Washington, and what we, the Congress, is trying to do is help sports clean up its own act.

Q: Why is Congress dealing with steroid use when there are so many other issues in the world?

That's a fair question, but you know, steroid abuse, there's a fairness and competitive issue, but there's also a health issue. If you're a young man or young woman still in your growing period and you take steroids to be more competitive in your sport, it unbalances your mind.

Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Texas Rep. Joe Barton challenged leaders of Major League Baseball on steroid use. Barton is also the founding co-chairman of Asthma Awareness Day on Capitol Hill.
