The thing that surprised me is not that there's a lot of sexual activity [on college campuses], but the pressure that it exerts on everybody, even if they don't want to get into the game.
Q. What did you learn about sex these days on college campuses?
The thing that surprised me is not just that there's a lot sexual activity, because that was in the newspapers, but the fact of the pressure that it exerts on everybody, even if they don't want to get into the game.
Q. How are drinking and partying connected to sexual activity on college campuses?
A lot of the so-called "hook-ups," are alcohol-driven. I think very seldom does it happen just because they're two good-looking young people on campus and they say, "Gee, it would be great to get it on." I think usually, somebody's drunk, and more often, it's the girl. But as for alcohol itself, I am convinced that there is no more drinking than there was in the past.
In his latest book, I Am Charlotte Simmons, novelist, journalist and social commentator Tom Wolfe draws on his observation of campuses across the country to immortalize college life in the '00s-where among other things, alcohol rules the day.
