Mandatory Health Insurance

A group of commercial hospital chains recently proposed that all individuals be required to have basic health coverage. California Gov. Schwarzenegger has also proposed mandatory health insurance for the state's citizens, similar to a Massachusetts bill that became law last year.

Should states require residents to obtain health insurance?

Yes, residents should be required to have health insurance just as drivers are required to carry auto insurance.

Yes, as long as there are subsidies for low-income residents.

Only if insurers are regulated on how much they can charge.

No, states should not require residents to have health coverage.

Other/none of the above
