YOUNG VOICES

Do You Celebrate Malcolm X's Birthday?
by Tamika Thompson

Like the rest of the nation, I have regularly celebrated the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. for years. But it wasn't until I took a class with Manning Marable during my college days at Columbia that I also began to mark the birthday of Malcolm X - a much more controversial civil rights leader.

Although his birthday is not a national holiday and he might not be discussed as much as King in the mainstream media, Malcolm X's life, speeches and legacy are certainly worth noting. But why doesn't May 19th receive more attention? What are your thoughts?
