Science Fiction Friday Draws Nigh!

Damon Gambuto by Damon Gambuto     Department: Correlations

Hi everybody.  I have a fun announcement.  I am instituting a new, recurring feature on my blog.  It's called Science Fiction Friday.   On the third Friday of the month I will interview a different writer about his or her current work.  The inaugural installment will be a chat with science fiction legend GREG BEAR!!!  He's an author, illustrator, government advisor, and so much more.  Dare I call him a polymath? I dare, I dare.

It's been a true pleasure having had the opportunity to get to know Greg over the past couple of months and now  you get to share the joy.  Greg has been kind enough to take time out of his day to chat with me. (I know, I don't get it either, but it rocks!)  This Friday come have a look at what Greg has to say about his new book QUANTICO and how he came to be part of a team of science fiction authors who consulted for the defense department. And really that's just the beginning of the cool stuff he has to talk about.

Greg is an important and visionary literary voice, but - without getting too obsequious - he's also one of the more impressive intellects I've come across during my WIRED Science tenure (and I talk to lots of smarties).  So check in on Friday and read all that he has to say.  I promise there will be very little Damon and lots and lots of Greg!

This Wired Science format intrigues me, and I am will be happy to read your Science Fiction Friday. Greg Bear is a good author. I agree, like Gibson, Bear is an intellectual.

Yes, I had heard in the past that a group of science fiction authors were in talks with the Defense Department.
Even though military science fiction is usually not my cup of tea, I have been REALLY impressed with the new Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell.

The third of the series, Lost Fleet: Courageous, just came out this month, and I can't wait until it gets here. Each book is named after one of the ships in his Lost Fleet series: Dauntless, Fearless and Courageous.

Jack Campbell parlays his naval experience and his knowledge of science very well in his explanations of ship movements w/red shift and blue shift. Because he uses REAL science to develop his analogous futuristic stories, he makes these stories very visual appealing.

In another life, Jack Campbell is a retired Naval officer with actual experience on his side. http://www.sff.net/people/john-g-hemry/

It's all about the science and adventure;)
