Evolution for everyone
Free science publications rock my socks. And there's an almost-brand-spankin'-new one that has a bit of a different flavor from many of the dry academic tomes: Evolution: Education and Outreach is the brainchild of scientist/author Niles Eldredge and his son Gregory (a high school science teacher), who serve as journal editors. The journal is geared toward "students of all ages" seeking to improve their own understanding (and teaching!) of evolution. With just 2 issues out, there are already gems like T. Ryan Gregory's "Understanding Evolutionary Trees" (which definitely will be assigned reading in my Molecular Epidemiology course next fall) and another article on what we can learn from skulls, describing a science discovery module for middle or high schoolers. Check out the two issues so far, and pass along the word to your favorite biology teacher!
