Description
Create a video presenting ordinary science idea in a way that is extraordinary for the KCET Wired Science Student Video Contest (the "Contest"). Those that make a submission of a video in the Contest will compete for a prize as described below.

Eligibility
In order to be eligible to participate in the Contest, an entrant must be least fourteen (14) years of age at the time of entry, must be a legal resident of one of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia, and must be currently enrolled as a full time student in grades 9 through 12 (or equivalent) at a public, private, or home school.
Immediate family members and household members of employees, officers or directors of Sponsor, Administrator, PBS Broadcasting, Wired Magazine, or their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, parent companies, and advertising and promotion agencies are not eligible to enter or to win. "Immediate Family Members" shall mean legal guardians, children, step-children, siblings, step-siblings or similar. "Household Members" shall mean those people who share the same residence at least three months a year.
The person(s) who meet all of the above eligibility requirements, obtain a unique user identification and submit a Submission and Official Entry Form will be deemed the entrant ("Entrant"). The Entrant(s) are the natural person(s) who are the authorized account holders of the unique user identification and the e-mail addresses associated with that identification. In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of the holder of a user identification, the dispute will be resolved in favor of the Entrant(s) as identified in the Submission and Official Entry Form.

Timing
The Contest begins November 27, 2007 at 12:01 am Eastern Standard Time ("EST") and ends on April 1, 2008 at 8:59 pm EST (the "Contest Period"). Administrator's computer system shall be the official timekeeping device for this Contest.

Sponsor
The sponsor of the Contest is Community Television of Southern California (KCET), located at 4401 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90027 ("Sponsor"). Administrator. The administrator of the Contest is Apple, Inc., located at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA 95014 ("Administrator").

How to Enter
To enter the Contest, Entrants should: (a) Register for the Contest by completing the Official Entry Form; (b) Create a video that complies with these Official Rules (a "Submission"), and (c) upload the Submission to Administrator's website.

Registering for the Contest
Prior to uploading a Submission, Entrants must register for the Contest. To register for the Contest, Entrants must access the Contest website at http://edcommunity.apple.com/wiredscience/contest.php. Once on the web site, Entrants must create unique user identifications and must submit an official entry form to accompany their Submission. The entry form will require:
- The name(s), address(es), and e-mail address(es) of the Entrant(s);
- The name of the school(s) wherein the Entrant(s) are enrolled;
- The name(s), address(es), and e-mail address(es) of the Entrant(s);
- The name of any person other than the Entrant(s) depicted in the Submission;
- A summary of what scientific principle the Submission explains (200 words or less);
- If Entrant(s) are under the age of eighteen (18), confirmation of parents' or legal guardians' written permission to create and submit a Submission;
- Confirmation of the Entrants' teacher's participation in the Contest;
- Confirmation that the Entrant(s) and the Submission have complied with all other restrictions, representations, and warranties as required by these Official Rules;
The deadline to register for the Contest is March 15, 2008 at 8:59 pm (EST). No Entrant will be eligible to compete in this Contest if the registration is not accomplished by the time.

Creating a Submission
Each Submission must conform to the following rules:

Specifications. All Submissions must be a digital video that is:
- In .mov or .wmv formats
- Four (4) minutes in length or less
- Under two hundred (200) megabytes in size.

Content Requirements/Theme. All Submissions must explain an ordinary, basic, or commonplace science concept in a way that is original, creative, and entertaining. The concept depicted in the Submission can be from any branch of science taught at the high school level (grades 9 through 12 or equivalent). For example, biology, chemistry, physics or atmospheric sciences would all be appropriate subject matters for a Submission.
Further, all Submissions must be produced in accordance with customary safety precautions and best practices for high school science departments.

Content Restrictions. Submissions must NOT contain:
- Any copyrighted material not in the public domain;
- Any trademarks of any third-party;
- Third party voice-overs;
- Third party stock photography or artwork not in the public domain; or
- Nudity, lewd or vulgar behavior; offensive language and/or gestures, including exploitation of children or animals.

Additional Limitations.
- Each Entrant may submit only one (1) video. Entrants submitting more than one video will have all Submissions disqualified.
- Submissions must be made in English or subtitled in English.
- Submissions must be original and unique. Submissions that appear to be duplicates will be discarded and will not be posted or considered. Sponsor or Administrator shall have the right to reject entries that after examination appear to infringe the rights of any third party without notice to the Entrant(s). Modified versions of professionally-produced works will be disqualified. The Submissions cannot be derivative works from original works created by persons or entities other than the Entrant(s).

How to Submit
Once the Submission is finalized, the Entrant(s) should upload the video to the Administrator via the internet. Entrants should direct their web browser to http://edcommunity.apple.com/wiredscience/contest.php to accomplish the upload. All Submissions must be uploaded by April 1, 2008 at 8:59 pm EST. No Submission may be uploaded after this time. Once a Submission is uploaded, Entrant(s) cannot change, modify, or replace the Submission. Please ensure that the file to be submitted is the final video product intended for consideration in this Contest. Submissions meeting the criteria established above will be available for viewing by the public shortly after uploading.
In case of unforeseen problems, Entrants are encouraged to retain a hard copy of their Submission on DVD or miniDV cassette after they have uploaded the video file.

Copyright Ownership/Right of Publicity/Warranties
By submitting an Submission, Entrant represents and warrants that:
- Entrants are the sole designers, creators, and owners of all elements of the Submission, including any visual or auditory components. The Submission does not infringe upon the intellectual property or moral rights of any third party;
- The persons depicted in the video are the Entrants, or have granted to the Entrants written permission to use their image or likeness in the Submission.
- The Submission does not infringe upon the privacy or publicity rights of any third party;
- The Submission does not now, and will not in the future, violate any enforceable agreements or understandings Entrants may have with any third party;
- The Submission has not been entered in or won awards any contest or award; and
- The Submission has not been published, distributed, or disseminated previously in any medium.
Uploading a Submission to the Contest Web Site constitutes a grant to Sponsor of an irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide right and license to use, copy, sublicense, edit, modify, make derivative works, publish, exploit, transmit, distribute, publicly perform, publish, delete or display the content of and elements embodied in the Submission and the Submission itself, in whole or in part, in perpetuity in any and all media (whether now existing or hereafter devised) without limitation or acknowledgement.
Except where prohibited, participation in the Contest constitutes Entrant's consent to Sponsor's and its agents' use of Entrant's name, likeness, photograph, voice, opinions, address and/or ideas and statements about the Submission for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without further payment or consideration.

Selection of Winners
Once all Submissions have been received, a panel of qualified, independent judges, as determined by Sponsor, will select winners for the First, Second, and Third Place prizes, as well as prizes for twenty (20) semi-finalists, from all eligible Submissions. Judging of Submissions will be done based on the following criteria:
- Is the Submission original, creative, and well-made? (35% of overall score)
- Does the Submission explain the scientific principle at issue clearly and accurately? (35% of overall score)
- Does the Submission make science more interesting and relevant for high school students? (30% of overall score)

Winner Notification/Verification
On or about May 1, 2008, the twenty (20) semi-finalist prize winners will be announced. From this pool of twenty semi-finalists, the three (3) Submissions with the highest scores will be selected as the First, Second, and Third Place winners, respectively. Announcement of the First, Second, and Third Place winners will take place on or about May 19, 2008. All winners will be notified by telephone or e-mail (at Sponsor's discretion), and will be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability/Publicity, and any other documentation reasonably required by Sponsor within fourteen (14) days of notification. In the event of noncompliance, if winner cannot be reached, or if the notification is returned as unclaimed or is undeliverable, the winner may be disqualified and the Submission receiving the next best score will be selected as an alternate. Failure to comply with any request for documents may result in forfeiture of winner status and selection of an alternate winner.
In case of unforeseen problems, Entrants are encouraged to retain a hard copy of their Submission on DVD or miniDV cassette after they have uploaded the video file.

Prizes
First Place Prize. The Submission receiving the highest score from the judges will win a cash prize of $2,000, in addition to the Semi-Finalist Prize. Approximate Retail Value ("ARV"): $2,120 USD.
Second Place Prize. The Submission receiving the second highest score from the judges will win a cash prize of $1,000, in addition to the Semi-Finalist Prize. ARV: $1,120 USD.
Third Place Prize. The Submission receiving the third highest score from the judges will win a cash prize of $500, in addition to the Semi-Finalist Prize. ARV: $620 USD.
Semi-Finalist Prize. The twenty (20) Submissions selected as Semi-Finalists will receive a one-year, free subscription to Wired Magazine. Additionally, the science department at the school attended by the Entrant will receive an additional one-year subscription to Wired Magazine and $100 to be used for scientific education. ARV for semi-finalist prizes not included in First, Second, or Third Place Prizes: $120 USD.
Total ARV for the Contest: $5,990 USD.
All Winners are responsible for any and all federal, state and/or local taxes resulting from acceptance of the prize. Winners are advised that that before accepting the prize, they should consult a tax advisor because receipt of the prize may have income tax consequences and may impact financial aid eligibility of the designated beneficiary. Prize is nontransferable. Where applicable, no prize substitution is allowed except at the discretion of Sponsor. If a prize cannot be awarded due to circumstances beyond the control of Sponsor, a substitute prize of equal or greater retail value will be awarded; provided, however, that if prizes are awarded but unclaimed/forfeited by recipient, the prize will be deemed forfeit and void and will not be awarded., except in Sponsor's sole discretion. Other restrictions may apply. As this Contest is one of skill, the odds of winning depend on quality and number of eligible entries received.

General Considerations
By uploading or mailing in a Submission, Entrants agree to abide by the terms of these Official Rules, the Terms and Conditions of the Administrator (as found on the webpage were Entrants upload their Submission, and by the decisions of Sponsor which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to this Contest.
By uploading or mailing in a Submission, Entrants release Sponsor, Administrator, their respective officers, directors, agents, employees, and all others associated with the development and execution of this Contest from any and all liability with respect to or in any way arising from this Contest and/or acceptance or use/misuse of the prizes, including but not limited to liability for personal injury, bodily injury including wrongful death or disability, damage to property, and damage or loss of any other kind. Sponsor is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Web site users or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or used in the Contest or by any technical or human error which may occur in the processing of Submission in the Contest. Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error; omission; interruption; deletion; defect; delay in operation or transmission; communications-line failure, theft, or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. Sponsor is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines; computer on-line systems, servers, or providers; computer equipment; software; or failure of e-mail or entry on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Web site or combination thereof, including injury or damage to Entrants or to any person's computer related to or resulting from participating or downloading materials in this Web site or Contest. Sponsor is not responsible for user cheating or fraud by any Entrants. Any activities intended to disrupt or interfere with the proper play of the Contest, or defraud Sponsor in any way will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Entrants who engage in any of the foregoing activities will be disqualified and will forfeit any prize won.
If for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, the Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the Contest, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest.

Disputes
Except where prohibited, entrant agrees that: (1) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the United States District Court for the Central District of California or the appropriate California State Court located in Los Angeles County, California, U.S.A.; (2) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering this Contest, but in no event attorneys' fees; and (3) under no circumstances will entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and entrant hereby waives all rights to claim, indirect, punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses, and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of the entrant and Sponsor in connection with the Contest, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of California, U.S.A. without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the State of California or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the State of California.
