Anatomy of a Latin Love Song
Ever wanted to learn about the heart by way of a Latin love song? Well, now you can, thanks to California-based musical comedy duo Hard 'N Phirm, comprising our very own Chris Hardwick and his close college pal Mike Phirman (Get it? Hard 'N Phirm?). The two met at UCLA, where they were both members of a stand-up comedy club that performed around campus a few times a year. "Mike and I, we just sort of hit it off," recalls Hardwick. "There was one show in particular where Mike had a guitar, so we were like, 'Hey, why don't we do some songs?'"
That's how it all started.
The duo began with cover songs—think “The Muppet Show” theme—and not soon after, their bag of musical tricks won them first prize in UCLA's annual talent competition, Spring Sing. "There's a plaque in the Alumni Center for UCLA that for 1995 says 'Hard 'N Phirm,'" Hardwick says. After graduating—both with degrees in philosophy—the two went their separate ways until 2003, when they decided that it was time to begin writing original songs. And that's when "El Corazon" came to be.
"El Corazon," which Hardwick says was "geographically inspired," is a tribute to the Latin love songs that are a staple of Los Angeles radio. The term "el corazon" is Spanish for "the heart," and that's exactly what the song, passionately sung by Hardwick and Phirmon, is about—it explains the anatomy of the heart and how it does its job. "The idea was, 'Hey, let's write a Latin love song in Spanish, but let's just have it be literally about el corazon—medical facts about the heart,'" Hardwick explains.
That wasn't an easy task. Although Hardwick and Phirman spoke a little Spanish, they weren't exactly fluent in Spanish medical terminology, so they had to turn to a friend of a friend—a Colombian medical student at UCLA. "When we gathered all the facts about the heart that we wanted to express in the song, we sent them over, and then she translated them for us," Hardwick recalls. They created the video to accompany the music, so that they could perform live with the video playing in the background.
Some of their performances have been interesting. At one of them, Hard 'N Phirm were surprised to discover two members of the band Heart among the audience (if you haven't noticed, there's a conspicuous reference to them in "El Corazon"). And on a separate occasion, Hardwick was lucky enough to meet Heart's lead singer, Ann Wilson. But did he tell her about El Corazon? Apparently not. "What am I going to say? 'We wrote this song, and it's about how the heart works, and your band's name is Heart?'" Hardwick says. "There's no way that would have been good."
