In 1919, The General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) was established, joining in the new business of making loans for auto buyers. Americans began to use the new credit plans on everything else as well, from living room suites to sterling silverware to diamond rings. The idea of buying something only when one had money to pay for it was on its way out.
