Nick Lowe

By Emily on October 10, 2008 10:57 AM | Permalink | Comments (7)
Nick Lowe was FANTASTIC last night. You may not know him by name, but you know his songs: "(What's So Funny About) Peace Love and Understanding?", "The Beast in Me", and "When I Write the Book." This man is a songwriter in the finest sense of the word and delivers it all with charm, elegance and charisma to spare. As Terry Lickona mentioned during his introduction, it is not often that someone appears on ACL with nothing but an acoustic guitar and an amp; that kind of minimalism can be a bit of a challege to turn into good television. But once Lowe started playing, the audience was immediately captivated by his clever, intuitive and amusing songs, and as someone who watched it from the control room, I can assure you it is going to be great television. It was such a pleasure having Nick Lowe finally make his debut on Austin City Limits.
Be sure to catch it when it premieres on January 31st (check local listings)!

Here's another report on the taping from Austin Music Source, the Austin American-Statesman's music blog.

Probably the best (at least one of the best) tapings I've ever been to. He was simply phenomenal. Great stage presence, great songs, great audience. I was blown away. ACL is a very special thing. I feel privileged to have seen him in such an intimate setting. So glad he played "The Beast in Me", that I first heard Johnny Cash cover on the first American Recordings record.

I can't thank you enough for the tickets to this taping! This was such a wonderful experience. He was so amazing, and I know I was captivated. My sister and I squealed when he started singing "All Men are Liars". I can't wait to see how the taping came out.

What a fantastic show! Nick was so smooth, the music was simple yet packed with power and emotion. I loved this performance and hope he gets a full hour on the show! It was magic. Thanks ACL!

Glad everybody enjoyed it as much as we did. Having Nick on was like a dream come true. He's probably the most charming performer I've ever seen, and those songs...a tunesmith's tunesmith. Can't wait for the rest of the world to see this one!

I saw Nick in Cleveland just days after this taping for Austin City Limits... that makes three times this year if anyone is counting. Each and every time he delivered a steller performance! Give him the full and hour and ask him back for more!!
