Louise
Arnett's work as a senior records manager for Federated Department Stores
fuels more than just her take home pay. Louise applies her professional
skills and donates time to the national Kids Café program that feeds more than 100 hungry children
every week in Newport, Kentucky. According to Second Harvest, which runs
Kids Cafe, 8 million children in the United States suffer every day from
chronic hunger. In fact, of all the 26 million needy Americans assisted
by the Second Harvest network each year, 38 percent are children under
the age of 18. Betty Cooley, a retired cook, is Kids Café's executive
chef and volunteer coordinator of the Newport, Kentucky program. "I just
recruit and recruit and recruit," Betty says. "Not only does it help the
kids but it makes you feel good. .. Just when they come in and they run
up and they want that hug." Proving that our work ethic lives long past
the last paycheck, Betty was recently awarded the Golden Rule prize, presented
by JC Penny and the United Way to honor local citizens contributing to
community. For more about opportunities to fight hunger nationwide, find
a local food bank near you or visit our volunteer
