Linda
J. Sax is
Assistant Professor In-Residence, Director of the Cooperative
Institutional Research Program (CIRP) and Associate Director of
the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA. In that
capacity, she is responsible for CIRP's annual survey of incoming
freshmen, as well as an annual survey of continuing college students,
and a triennial survey of college faculty.
Dr. Sax
teaches graduate courses in research methodology, evaluation
of higher education, and gender issues in higher education.
Dr. Sax received her B.A. degree (1990) in political economy
from the University of California, Berkeley, and her M.A.
(1991) and Ph.D. (1994) degrees in higher education from UCLA.
Dr. Sax's research focuses on gender differences in college
student development, specifically how institutional characteristics,
peer and faculty environments, and forms of student involvement
may differentially affect male and female college students.
Currently,
she is the principal investigator on a national study of student
development during the first year of college, a project funded
by the Pew Charitable Trusts and conducted in collaboration
with the Policy Center on the First Year of College. Recently,
she served as the principal investigator on a national study
of graduate education in science and engineering funded by
the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
Dr. Sax also directed a national evaluation of student participants
in President Clinton's Learn and Serve America Higher Education
(LSAHE), a project sponsored by the Corporation for National
Service. The recipient of the 1999 Early Career Award from
the Association for the Study of Higher Education, Dr. Sax
has given numerous presentations at national conferences,
has authored book chapters and monographs, and has published
over one dozen articles in journals such as Research in
Higher Education, The Review of Higher Education, The Journal
of Higher Education, The Journal of College Student Development,
and Educational Record. ̣She has served on the Editorial
Boards for The Review of Higher Education and Research in
Higher Education. |

Bob
McCannon
is a humorous, entertaining and inspirational presenter. He teaches
skills to successfully approach media issues such as addictions,
violence, technological education, parenting, reading skills,
self-esteem, productivity, motivation, cynicism, news, democracy,
compulsive consumption, debt, and stereotyping.
Bob is the Director of the New
Mexico Media Literacy Project , the most successful grassroots
media literacy project in the U.S. He has taught media education
in elementary, middle, high school, and graduate school. In the
last seven years, he has done over 600 presentations, workshops,
in-services and keynotes with over 75,000 people across the country.
He has trained over 400 volunteer "catalysts" (who train others)
in intensive four-day workshops. Bob has developed nationally
recognized media literacy curricula and resources, including the
video, Just Do Media Literacy: Students, Experts, Issues and
Examples, and the world's first media literacy CD-ROM resource,
Understanding Media, which contains 221 media examples
(74 video) and 400 pages of text. It covers 33 skills and 34 media
issues. It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics
and the National Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.
Bob has also produced the forthcoming CD-ROM, Media Literacy:
Reversing Addiction in Our Compulsive Culture. This new CD-ROM
contains 5, two-hour, stand alone, prevention presentations. Nearly
200 media examples are included, with talking points that cover
the topics most requested by teachers, prevention specialists,
and medical practitioners. |

Jose
Espinal has been a member of EPTV (El Puente Television) for
two years. El Puente is a holistic community based learning and
development organization in North Brooklyn, New York City. El
Puente's mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace
and justice. Founded in 1982 as a youth center for the arts and
culture in the South side of Williamsburg, today El Puente includes
three community centers in Williamsburg and Bushwick, a NYC Board
of Education Public High School, El Puente Academy for Peace and
Justice, and several other community development initiatives in
the areas of community health, environment, and economic justice.
Jose has worked in the production of En La Factoria: The Williamsburg
Garment Workers (1998) and the PSA's (1999). Jose has also
participated in the Urban Visionaries Youth Video Festival. Jose
has been a leader in the group, bringing his supportive personality,
his friends and his ideas. Jose is also involved with the El Puente
Health Promoters, which conducts surveys about health issues in
the community. The PSA's were made by El Puente's EPTV through
generous funding from the Open Society Institute and as part of
New York City Childhood Asthma Initiative of the City of New York
Department of Health. |

Rubin
Polizzi is 16 and lives in New York City. He is a big football
fan. His favorite team is the JETS. He lives with his mother and
brother in a normal-sized two bedroom apartment. Rubin goes to
high school at Urban Academy. Urban got him started at Downtown
Community TV Center through its internship program. He has
been there for one year. He made his first video when he
was 15, R.I.P., which is about teens coping with death.
He hopes to make more. |
